High-Confidence Strikeout Picks

All odds were current as of 8:30 AM

Yoshinobu Yamamoto OVER 6.5 strikeouts (+109 DraftKings)

Yamamoto has looked pretty sharp lately, striking out eight or more batters in four of his previous six starts. He also has not allowed more than one earned run in his previous four starts. The strikeouts are backed by some very solid metrics as well,

On the season, Yamamoto has posted a 29.5% whiff rate, which ranks in the 79th percentile. He has also posted a 34.3% chase rate, ranking him in the 84th percentile. These lead up to a 24.7% K rate, which should be good enough to get seven White Sox at plus money.

Over the previous two weeks, the White Sox have been posting a 22.7% K rate versus right-handed hitters, which ranks ninth-worst in the league. While their 143 wRC+ is a bit scary, as aforementioned, Yamamoto has been in solid form over his previous four starts, so this is a good spot to take a shot on him against Chicago.

Tarik Skubal OVER 5.5 strikeouts (+109 DraftKings)

Tarik Skubal makes his return today after having loose bodies removed from his elbow. He ends up missing about six weeks, which is a lot better than many of us could have hoped. He has looked solid in rehab, so the fact that we are getting 5.5 as the number here, and at plus money, is kind of surprising.

He should be able to rack up some punchouts against this Guardians' lineup. Over the previous two weeks, they have been posting a 29.9% K rate versus left-handed pitchers, which is ranked the worst in baseball. Additionally, they are posting an abysmal 57 wRC+ mark over that same span.

Skubal's metrics have been solid this season. Overall, he has a whiff rate of 29.8%, which ranks in the 82nd percentile. His chase rate of 36.1% ranks him in the 92nd percentile, and his overall strikeout rate of 27.1% is good enough to rank him in the 81st percentile.

One other note is that Skubal has a 31.1% K rate against this Guardians' lineup across 164 plate appearances, so not exactly a small sample we're talking about.
