2026 Second Base Rankings: Points Leagues
These 2B rankings are for points and head-to-head points leagues. You can also see our roto fantasy baseball rankings.
Before we get to the rankings, let's quickly review points leagues and how they differ from other formats. Typically, points leagues have different league settings and scoring formats than other fantasy baseball leagues. Different MLB stats and categories are assigned different point values, and those can vary by individual league settings. Those different point buckets are then added up over the course of a scoring period or season.
In many cases, hitters who walk more and strike out less are preferred for points leagues. Also, many league formats tend to give more weight to pitchers than normal, as they can easily accrue points through categories like Innings Pitched. These are the general frameworks that we use for our points league rankings below, and explain why they look different than more standard 5x5 roto fantasy baseball rankings.

Fantasy Baseball Second Base News
Gavin Lux, Tampa Bay Rays
The Tampa Bay Rays are acquiring infielder Gavin Lux and right-hander Chris Clark from the Cincinnati Reds on Friday in a three-team deal that also involves the Los Angeles Angels, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan. In his first and only season with the Reds in 2025, Lux slashed .269/.350/.374 with only five home runs, 53 RBI, and 49 runs scored in 140 games played. The trade from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Reds allowed Lux to accumulate a career-high 503 plate appearances in an everyday role.
The problem is that he hit just .179/.270/.196 against left-handed pitchers, which makes it unlikely he'll have an everyday role at second base in his new home in Tampa. Lux has a good command of the strike zone and takes plenty of walks, but he doesn't help himself with poor defensive metrics. He lost 2B eligibility going into 2026 and lacks power and speed, leaving him very little fantasy appeal.
Brendan Donovan, St Louis Cardinals
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Seattle Mariners are viewed as the leading suitor to land St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Brendan Donovan, largely because Seattle possesses the strongest farm system to facilitate a deal. Rosenthal added that the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals have also expressed interest.
However, he believes the Giants lack the prospect capital to entice the Cardinals, while the Royals could make a competitive offer only by parting with some of their minor-league pitching depth. Donovan has posted a 115 wRC+ or better in each of the past four seasons with St. Louis. In 2025, he slashed .287/.353/.422 with 10 home runs, 50 RBI, 64 runs scored, and three stolen bases across 515 plate appearances.
If Donovan is traded to any of these clubs, his draft value should remain largely unchanged. For fantasy purposes, the 28-year-old profiles as a solid middle-infielder in 12- or 15-team leagues who can help improve batting average.
Willi Castro, Colorado Rockies
The Colorado Rockies agreed to a two-year, $12 million deal with free-agent utility man Willi Castro on Thursday, sources told Jorge Castillo of ESPN. Castro, a 28-year-old switch-hitter from Puerto Rico, will be looking to bounce back in 2026 after a rough year with the Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs in 2025. In 120 total games last season, he hit .226/.313/.366 with a .679 OPS, 11 home runs, 33 RBI, 58 runs, and 10 stolen bases.
After being traded to the Cubs, Castro went 17-for-100 (.170) with a homer, eight walks, and 27 strikeouts in 34 regular-season games. He can play pretty much all over the diamond, which should give him a path to regular playing time in Colorado this year. Castro should also bounce back offensively at hitter-friendly Coors Field, but he remains a glove-first asset that won't be much more than bench depth in deeper fantasy baseball leagues in 2026
Nico Hoerner, Chicago Cubs
Adam Jude of The Seattle Times reports that the Seattle Mariners "remain interested" in acquiring Chicago Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner. With the Cubs' recent addition of third baseman Alex Bregman, Chicago could be looking to shuffle pieces around in its infield, and Hoerner will reach free agency at the end of the 2026 season. Across 156 games for the Cubs in 2025, Hoerner posted a .297/.345/.394 slash line with seven home runs, 61 RBI, 89 runs scored, and 29 stolen bases.
The 28-year-old is widely considered one of the best defensive second basemen in baseball and has logged at least 640 plate appearances in three straight seasons. Seattle currently has Cole Young penciled in as its opening day second baseman, who posted a .607 OPS across 257 plate appearances in 2025. Jude also reports that the Mariners have a strong interest in St. Louis Cardinals utility man Brendan Donovan, so it appears that the team is actively seeking infield upgrades.
J.J. Wetherholt, St. Louis Cardinals
On Tuesday afternoon, the St. Louis Cardinals traded veteran third baseman Nolan Arenado to the Arizona Diamondbacks, and according to The Athletic's Katie Woo, this move opens the door for top prospect J.J. Wetherholt to compete for a starting job in spring training. Last season, Wetherholt saw extensive time at third base with Triple-A Memphis, potentially foreshadowing his role once he reaches the major leagues.
The 23-year-old is still developing his power, but for now, he profiles as a contact hitter with strong plate discipline. Between Double-A and Triple-A in 2025, Wetherholt slashed .306/.421/.510, collecting 56 doubles, 17 home runs, and 23 stolen bases while walking nearly as often as he struck out. His advanced approach and athleticism give him a strong chance to contribute immediately if he breaks camp with the big-league club.
If Wetherholt does earn a spot on the Opening Day roster, he projects for up to 15 home runs with 20 or more stolen bases and a .265 batting average. With this news, he should be drafted in all formats.
Matt Shaw, Chicago Cubs
Chicago Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw could lose playing time after the signing of Alex Bregman, or the team could look to move him in a trade. There was initial speculation that the team could move the top prospect to 2B and look to trade Nico Hoerner, but The Athletic's Keith Law reported that Shaw has shown "resistance to help from the Cubs' staff" and could be a trade candidate as a result.
Shaw hit .226 in 126 games last season, with 13 home runs, a .300 wOBA, and an elevated 21.5% strikeout rate. The 24-year-old Shaw would be an interesting acquisition for any team looking for young infield help since he has shown so much promise, but struggled to put it together in the majors. In 2024, he hit .284 between Double-A and Triple-A with 21 homers and 31 stolen bases. He has significant upside but raises some coachability questions, making him an intriguing yet risky potential addition this offseason.
Ceddanne Rafaela, Boston Red Sox
Boston Red Sox outfielder/infielder Ceddanne Rafaela might not shift positions as frequently in 2026. Recently, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said it was unlikely that Rafaela would play second base this season. Due to their logjam in the outfield, Rafaela played 24 games at second base in 2025. His defensive abilities are a much better fit in center field, as Rafaela committed three errors in a little over 20 games at the keystone.
The Red Sox would rather have Rafaela in center field, a position where he won a Gold Glove this past season. If he remains in the outfield, Rafaela would likely lose his second-base eligibility, which would be a bummer for fantasy managers. The elite defensive ability in the outfield should keep Rafaela in center field on an everyday basis.
