ANALYSIS: The New England Patriots bolstered their running back room in the second round of the draft by selecting top prospect TreVeyon Henderson out of Ohio State. While the former Buckeye flashed immense upside during the preseason, Henderson has seen his workload monitored during the first two weeks of the season.
In Week 1, Henderson logged only 23 offensive snaps and took five carries for 27 yards. However, he was heavily involved as a passer, seeing six targets. He caught all six for 24 yards. Despite this, veteran Rhamondre Stevenson logged nearly double the snaps.
In Week 2, Henderson saw this role decline. In their victory over the Dolphins, the rookie ran the ball just three times for 10 yards and added two catches (on two targets) for 30 receiving yards. More importantly, Henderson saw his snap count drop to just 16, a stark drop from his Week 1 total.
Given that Stevenson has earned the trust of the coaching staff and has found solid success, averaging 11.7 PPR points per game over the first two weeks, Henderson will see his upside significantly capped.
While Henderson should see his role increase, especially as a pass catcher, for the time being, he projects to be a risky RB3/flex in PPR leagues. Managers in standard 12-team leagues should opt to keep him on the bench in Week 3, despite facing a Pittsburgh defense that has allowed the 14th-most PPR points to RBs this season.
Despite this favorable matchup, Henderson is best left for deeper 12+ team leagues with multiple flex spots, given his uncertain role.
