Matthew Stafford 2025 Fantasy Football Outlook: Can He Be More Than Just a Streamer?
Matthew Stafford will likely go undrafted in most single-QB formats and be seen as little more than a possible weekly streamer. If the Rams continue to run their offense through Kyren Williams and an underneath passing game, as they have for the past two seasons, it may lead to a sputtering end to what has been, at times, a brilliant fantasy career. Since 2022, Stafford has recorded an average depth of target under 7.9 yards per PFF, while the Rams have run the ball on 50.7% of plays inside the 20. A common factor during this period is that Stafford and his receiving corps have rarely been healthy at the same time. In 2021, the last time both Stafford and his No. 1 WR played a full 17 games together (in this case, Cooper Kupp during his Triple Crown-winning season), Stafford had an average depth of target of 8.8 yards, and the Rams ran the ball on only 42.1% of their red zone plays. Signing Davante Adams to a two-year, $44 million deal this offseason and using their first draft pick on the explosive Oregon TE Terrance Ferguson suggests that head coach Sean McVay may be looking to revitalize the high-octane passing attack that brought a Super Bowl to Los Angeles. Adams alone has averaged 26 red zone targets and eight red zone TDs per year over the past five seasons, and when paired with third-year talent Puka Nacua, it can be argued that Stafford enters 2025 at the helm of the most dangerous offense of his career. With the Rams' schedule lightening up around the midpoint of the season and a fantasy playoff schedule that features three indoor games likely to produce fireworks against the Lions, Seahawks, and Falcons, the veteran quarterback has the potential to be a league-winner one more time, and he should be practically free. Stafford is currently QB27 in RotoBaller's latest rankings, making him more of an option in superflex/2QB leagues heading into fantasy football drafts.
