NHL DFS Analysis and Picks for 2/27/24

The 2023-2024 season is approaching its crucial stages with the NHL trade deadline in a week. Who will be buyers and who will be sellers as the race to the Stanley Cup goes full throttle?

Tonight we have a 12-game slate and four teams playing on a back-to-back: Ottawa, Washington, Dallas, and Los Angeles. The currently live top-three highest implied team totals are: New Jersey with 4.1, Florida with 4.0, and Detroit with 3.8. I will do my best to guide you through this 12-game slate on DraftKings and FanDuel starting at 7:00 p.m. EST.

DISCLOSURE: Make sure to monitor the NHL news feeds for the latest player status and injury news.

DraftKings and FanDuel Goalies - NHL DFS Picks

Jacob Markstrom - DK $7.8K || FD $8.2K

Opponent - Los Angeles Kings

As the norm at this point, when the Los Angeles Kings are on the slate, we take the opposing goalie. At the time of writing, prior to the Oilers game, five of the last seven opposing goalies have maintained value against the Kings. The visitors in Per 60 stats in their last 10 games, excluding splits, are the third best in Shots For and the third worst in Goals For. The Flames are not playing at their best, but Jacob Markstrom is showcasing elite-level goaltending over his last 10 games, registering a 0.99 Goals Saved Above Expected Per 60. Although he is at the top end of the $7K range, Markstrom is the top-value goalie of the slate.

Others To Consider (Cash/GPP):

  • Jordan Binnington (DK $7K || FD $7.9K)
  • Kaapo Kahkonen (DK $6.9K || FD $6.6K)

DraftKings and FanDuel Centers - NHL DFS Picks

Nico Hischier - DK $6.3K || FD $7.1K

Opponent - San Jose Sharks

There are multiple centers between $6K and $8K on DraftKings in good matchups. However, Nico Hischier is by far in the best matchup. Throughout his most recent five games, he has three goals, one assist, 18 shots, and two blocked shots. In Per 60 stats in the last 10 games, excluding splits, the Sharks are dead last in Shots Against, Scoring Chances Against, and High Danger Chances Against. If not for goaltending, San Jose would be in a much worse spot. Hischier and the Devils are expected to take advantage of this matchup in what is a must-win game.

Barrett Hayton - DK $3.5K || FD $3.6K

Opponent - Montreal Canadiens

Barrett Hayton has returned to his old duties as the top center for the Arizona Coyotes and he couldn't have a better matchup to showcase the promotion. In his last five appearances, he has one goal, eight shots, and two blocked shots. In Per 60 stats, excluding splits in their last 10 games, the Canadiens are in the bottom 10 in Scoring Chances Against, High Danger Chances Against, and Goals Against. With plenty of big names to pay up for tonight, Hayton offers the perfect mix of value and upside at an affordable salary.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP):

  • Dylan Larkin (DK $7.4K || FD $8.5K)
  • Shane Pinto (DK $5.9K || FD $5.9K)

DraftKings and FanDuel Wings - NHL DFS Picks

Tyler Toffoli - DK $5.5K || FD $6.2K

Opponent - San Jose Sharks

After more failures than successes, Jack Hughes has been moved back to center. With this move, Toffoli is expected to be the prime beneficiary. The winger is already on fire, posting two goals, four assists, 14 shots, and one blocked shot in his most recent five appearances and now he has a premium matchup in San Jose. With Hughes focused on playing center, he will relinquish a chunk of the shot volume he had as a winger to Toffoli. In a meeting with the Sharks, who concede the most Shots Against Per 60, it will be astonishing if Toffoli doesn't hit the Shots Bonus on DraftKings.

Jason Zucker - DK $3.3K || FD $4.6K

Opponent - Montreal Canadiens

With the exception of Clayton Keller who is out with an injury, the Coyotes are reverting back to their original top line with Jason Zucker filling in for Keller. After Keller went down with an injury in the 4-3 loss in Winnipeg on Sunday, Zucker took over in his place. The latter had one assist and four shots in the loss. Prior to that game, Zucker had six shots. The Canadiens are starting to see positive regression in their defensive game, but negative regression in their goaltending. Will Zucker and the Coyotes be able to break open Sam Montembeault and the Canadiens?

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP):

  • Patrick Kane (DK $6.4K || FD $6.9K)
  • Andrei Svechnikov (DK $5.8K || FD $6.7K)

DraftKings and FanDuel Defensemen - NHL DFS Picks

Filip Hronek - DK $4.2K || FD $5.2K

Opponent - Pittsburgh Penguins

After what has been a long and gruesome stretch for Filip Hronek, the two-way defenseman is getting another crack on the top power-play unit for the Canucks. This comes at the perfect timing as they host the wounded Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins, who are a top-five defense in the league, are starting to flutter in form with both the defense coughing up High Danger Chances Against and the goalie tandem not playing at a top level like they were a few months ago. For just over $4K on DraftKings, Hronek offers the potential of both shots and blocked shots. Now that he is on the top power play again, his chance of producing points has skyrocketed.

Ryan McDonagh - DK $3.6K || FD $4.1K

Opponent - Ottawa Senators

Ryan McDonagh is a value play for every slate he plays on at this point thanks to his uptick in peripheral production. The two-way defenseman has four assists, eight shots, and 12 blocked shots in his last five games. Going up against a Senators team that is offense or nothing and traveling on a back-to-back is the perfect narrative for McDonagh. Between blocked shots, shots, and power-play time, he is expected to surpass value in this matchup.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP):

  • Jonas Brodin (DK $4.9K || FD $5.7K)
  • Quinn Hughes (DK $4K || FD $4.9K)
