However, Jacobs had a career-low 872 rushing yards in 2021. When Josh McDaniels got hired as the team’s new head coach, Las Vegas declined the running back’s fifth-year option, making him a free agent after the 2022 season.

What Did Josh Jacobs Accomplish This Season?

Jacobs was arguably the best running back this year. His 1,653 rushing yards led the NFL and were a career-high. His previous career high was 1,150 as a rookie. Furthermore, the star running back matched his career high in rushing touchdowns with 12.

Over the first three years of his career, the former Alabama star averaged 244 rushing attempts per season. This year Jacobs finished second in the NFL with 340 rushing attempts, a career-high. Furthermore, the Las Vegas running back led the league in rushing first downs this season, with 25 more than any other player.

Will The Raiders Re-sign Josh Jacobs To An Extension?

Right now, the Raiders are focused on the future of Derek Carr. After getting benched for the final few games this season, both sides agreed to a divorce. Las Vegas has until February 15 to move the veteran quarterback. Once that date arrivals, the Raiders will owe Carr another $40.4 million. The team will release the veteran if a trade can’t get worked out before that deadline.

After the Raiders deal with the quarterback situation, the next thing on their to-do list this offseason is Jacobs. If the two sides can’t agree to a long-term deal, Las Vegas will place the franchise tag on the star running back.

However, Jacobs won’t be happy with the franchise tag. The veteran running back expressed his displeasure for the team during the Pro Bowl games. However, the tag is the best outcome for the Raiders.

This year the franchise tag for running backs is just over $10 million. If Jacobs hits the open market, he likely receives a multi-year contract with a slightly higher annual average. Meanwhile, Las Vegas can force the running back to play on the one-year franchise tag before making a long-term decision next offseason.
