2013 Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 4 Quarterbacks (QB)

In this space, we will highlight recommended fantasy football waiver wire pickups to consider as candidates for Week Four of the 2013 fantasy football season, and your fantasy football rosters.

2013 Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 4 Quarterbacks

Geno Smith, QB, New York Jets

Geno Smith is coming off an impressive fantasy performance in which he threw for 331 yards and added a rushing TD in a 27-20 win over a mediocre Buffalo Bills team.  Smith showed flashes throughout, including  scrambling in for a TD and later connecting for a long TD pass to Santonio Holmes in the fourth quarter to put the Jets ahead for good.  Still, his weaknesses are glaring.  He is second in the league with six INTs and second-to-last with an unimpressive 53.9% passing completion rate.  Smith's next matchup comes against the Titans, who are 10th  in the league against the pass and may well take advantage of Smith’s penchant for throwing picks.  Nevertheless, he is still a player to watch.  A couple more rushing TDs could make all the difference in his ownership levels.

Ryan Tannehill, QB, Miami Dolphins

If you had bet that the Dolphins would be 3-0 at this point in the season, you would be in the black.  One reason the Fish were able to takedown the Colts and Falcons is Tannehill’s 66.4% completion rate, which ranks among the best in the NFL, placing in the top 10 among the likes of Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning and Matt Ryan.  A great stat that shows you Tannehill’s effectiveness is his third-down conversion rate.  On plays of more than three yards, he is 16-23, for 203 yards.  Week Four against the Saints may turn into a shootout, which bodes well for Tannehill’s passing game.  Pick him up in deeper leagues as a solid backup.

Andy Dalton, QB, Cincinnati Bengals

Dalton is looking like a more efficient version of his 2012 self.  He is still a mid-tier QB who makes for a good real football player but a fairly unexciting fantasy option.  Dalton has thrown for 282, 280 and 235 yards with five TD and three INT in three games.  He needs to get A.J. Green much more involved if he wants to rack up the passing yards.  Green had a great Week One, going for 162 yards, but he failed to top 50 yards in either of Weeks Two or Three.  As defenses double-team Green, Dalton will need a viable #2 that is better than Mohamed Sanu.  His TE combo of Tyler Eifert and Jermaine Gresham stand to benefit if no other WRs are able to separate themselves.  Week Four against Cleveland projects as an easier matchup for Dalton, as the Browns' D is middling against the pass and weak against the run.
