There has never been a bigger boom or bust player than San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Torrey Smith. Chances are if you are forced to start him in Week 14, you pretty much already know you’re screwed. But if you are trying to decide between Smith and another receiver, here’s some information that may force you to think twice before starting the former Baltimore Ravens star.
Smith was held out of practice on Thursday with a back and toe injury. Although he isn’t being listed on the injury report, he clearly isn’t 100 percent.
Smith is one of the most inconsistent players in the history of the league. For fantasy football players, he will either give you big fat zero in the points category or around 20 points. But he’s just not worth the risk, especially this time of year.

Through 12 games he has only 23 receptions for 529 yards and three touchdowns.
One receiver that hasn’t had problems with inconsistency is Oakland Raiders rookie Amari Cooper. Cooper has lived up to the hype during his rookie season with 62 receptions for 920 yards and four touchdowns. He has established himself as Derek Carr’s favorite target and one of the best youngest receivers in the league.
Unfortunately Cooper has landed on the Raiders injury report with a foot issue. However, it doesn’t sound like he is at any risk of missing the team’s Week 14 matchup against the Denver Broncos.
Normally Cooper can be considered a very high-end WR2, but since he has a tough matchup he should be considered a low-end WR2.
Speaking of rookie wide receivers, it doesn’t sound Chicago Bears’ Kevin White will see the football field this season. He has been on the team’s PUP list all season with a leg injury, but the team has been hesitant to rule him out for the entire year.
Despite head coach John Fox claiming White was all healed up a few weeks ago, the Chicago Tribune is reporting that the rookie will not be activated at all this season.
White has a ton of talent and should be held onto in all keeper and dynasty leagues, but he obviously doesn’t have any value for the rest of this season. But next season, White and fellow receiver Alshon Jeffery could become one of the top receiver duos in the enter league. And nobody will benefit from that more than quarterback Jay Cutler, who could be a QB1 all season next year.
