Fantasy Football Matchup Outlooks
Below are some fantasy football outlooks written by our NFL team here at RotoBaller, bringing you their fantasy football analysis and advice on which players to consider starting in Week 8:
Bucky Irving, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles said on Wednesday that running back Bucky Irving (foot, shoulder) will not make it back for Sunday's divisional contest against the New Orleans Saints in Week 8, according to Greg Auman of FOX Sports.
Irving will be missing his fourth straight game due to a foot sprain and a subluxation of his shoulder. However, with Tampa's bye coming in Week 9, perhaps he'll be ready to make his return in Week 10 when the team takes on the New England Patriots on Nov. 9.
With the 23-year-old set to miss yet another game, Rachaad White will be in play as an RB2 in all fantasy formats while making his fourth straight start as the lead back for the Buccaneers, with Sean Tucker handling backup duties again.
Garrett Wilson, WR, New York Jets
New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson (knee) has been ruled out for their Week 8 contest against the Cincinnati Bengals. The star wideout suffered this knee injury during the final quarter of their Week 6 loss to the Denver Broncos. Wilson was unable to suit up last weekend and will now miss his second-straight game.
During his first five games of the season, Wilson was on pace to enjoy the best season of his career as he caught 33 of his 48 targets for 382 yards and four touchdowns. As a result, managers should expect the vast majority of targets to go to rookie tight end Mason Taylor and wide receivers Josh Reynolds and Allen Lazard.
However, Taylor projects as a low-end TE1, while Reynolds and Lazard as desperate FLEX plays, as the Jets have yet to announce their starting QB for this contest. Wilson will look to return in Week 10 to face the Browns, following their Week 9 bye.
Christian McCaffrey, RB, San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey overcame a challenging matchup last week to eclipse 100 rushing yards in a game for the first time this season. Against the Falcons' surprisingly stout defense, he finished with 129 and two touchdowns on 24 carries, and had another 72 yards through the air on seven catches.
Another tough defense awaits McCaffrey and the 49ers in Week 8 against the Houston Texans. Houston has not given up 100 rushing yards to a back yet this year, and is allowing just 3.85 yards per carry.
McCaffrey will be hard-pressed to repeat as the overall RB1, but another top-12 finish can be expected given how often San Francisco puts the ball in his hands. Fantasy football managers can ignore the matchup and lock McCaffrey into starting lineups for Week 8.
CeeDee Lamb, WR, Dallas Cowboys
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb returned last week from his ankle injury and made an immediate impact, recording five catches for 110 yards and a touchdown in last Sunday's win over the Commanders.
He'll look to carry that success into Week 8 against the Denver Broncos in what promises to be a best-on-best matchup, as Lamb is set to face off against shutdown cornerback Patrick Surtain II. The Broncos have been one of the league's top defenses this season, ranking inside the top 10 against the pass and allowing just 180 passing yards per game.
It remains to be seen if Surtain will shadow Lamb throughout the contest, but regardless, Lamb draws one of the toughest individual matchups in football in this pivotal Week 8 showdown. RotoBaller currently ranks CeeDee Lamb as the No. 3 wide receiver for the week.
Josh Jacobs, RB, Green Bay Packers
Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs (calf) is off the injury report after three limited practice sessions, and he is good to go for the Packers' Week 8 matchup on Sunday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite Jacobs averaging just 3.7 yards per carry this season, he has tallied eight touchdowns on the ground and caught 16 passes for 179 yards through the air this season.
He's been extremely productive and remains the engine of the Packers' offensive attack. Jacobs was a game-time decision in Green Bay's Week 7 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, but still touched the ball 14 times and scored twice.
For fantasy, Jacobs is RB7 on the season and averages over 20 fantasy points per game, so we can't nitpick too much about the negatives as long as he's a dominant RB1 for fantasy. Jacobs is one of the best starts among fantasy running backs this week and should be locked into lineups when the Packers travel to Pittsburgh to play the Steelers.
