When Is Quinn Mathews Getting Called Up? Fantasy Baseball Prospect Outlook (Week 13 Update)

Quinn Mathews - Fantasy Baseball Prospects, Draft Sleepers, MLB Rookie Rankings

When is Quinn Mathews getting called up? Will Mathews get promoted in June 2025? Read about this top fantasy baseball prospect outlook heading into Week 13.

Since being selected in the fourth round of the 2023 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, pitching prospect Quinn Mathews has shown his potential down in the team's farm system. He finished with a solid 2.76 ERA and 202 strikeouts across 26 starts in 2024 between Single-A, High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A.

That strong first minor league season moved Mathews up the minor league ranks. He is the fourth-best left-handed pitcher prospect on MLB Pipeline and is currently St. Louis' top pitching prospect. Given the southpaw's start to the 2025 season, it's only a matter of time until the Cardinals promote him to their active roster.

So, when are the Cardinals going to call up Mathews? Can we expect him to make his debut in June? Let's dive in and find out.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy baseball lineup tools and resources:

Quinn Mathews Prospect Update for Fantasy Baseball

Mathews has really pitched well in the minors this season. Although he missed almost a month due to shoulder soreness in April and May, there appears to be no long-term effect of that injury. The 24-year-old hasn't allowed an earned run in two of his last four starts since his return, including five shutout innings with six strikeouts in his most recent outing on June 18.

However, there have been some ups and downs with Mathews at Triple-A this season. He hasn't pitched more than five innings in any start, and command remains a huge problem for the left-hander. MLB Pipeline's No. 35 overall prospect has walked 24 batters across 31 innings pitched. That equates to a whopping 17.9% walk rate.

Limiting the walks is something Mathews has to improve on moving forward. He has issued at least three walks in five of his seven Triple-A starts this season, which has hurt his chances of going deeper into games. The left-hander is averaging just 3.7 innings pitched per start with Triple-A  Memphis in 2025.

Quinn Mathews Outlook for Fantasy Baseball

The potential is there for Mathews to be a solid major league pitcher one day. He has a strong fastball and an above-average changeup that should play well in the big leagues. With a career 2.84 ERA and 237 strikeouts in his minor league career, the left-hander has seen plenty of success across all five levels in the minors.

Nevertheless, we likely won't see the Cardinals' top pitching prospect in the majors until he improves his walk rate. St. Louis isn't going to call him up amid these command issues. Therefore, we might not see Mathews in the big leagues until sometime in the second half of the season, possibly after the All-Star break.

That makes him someone to monitor for now in most fantasy leagues. Mathews isn't necessarily a strong stash candidate at this point in the season, but if you have an open roster spot, it might not be a bad idea to stash him on your bench. He should make his MLB debut later this season and could make an immediate impact in St. Louis' rotation.
