Week 5 Quarterbacks - Rankings & Matchups Analysis

Tom Brady Makes his much anticipated debut on Sunday against the Browns. He has had to sit on the sidelines and watch his teammates steal three wins, only to fall to the Bills last week without scoring a point on offense. We all know Brady has been itching to get out there, and will likely do his best to pummel the Browns into the ground. Brady won’t have his full stable of weapons with Rob Gronkowski hobbled, but with a healthy Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, and Martellus Bennett on the field, he will be able to deal a ton of damage.

Derek Carr versus Philip Rivers will likely be the most entertaining air-show we see all weekend. Both of these QBs have been playing well; Carr is coming off of a four TD performance, and holds a 9:1 TD:INT ratio through four games. Rivers has thrown two straight 300 yard games, and has a respectable 7:1 TD:INT ratio on the season. Both of these defenses have been amongst the 10 worst against the pass this season, and both teams will be looking for an all-important divisional win. This game has the potential to look a lot like the Chargers-Saints game last week that ended 35-to-34. Both QBs are great plays this week.

Usually, you always start the top QB in fantasy no matter what. However, after a 503-yard, four TD performance Matt Ryan takes a dip in our rankings for this week. Why? The Broncos passing defense is just that good. Ryan has been the top fantasy QB so far, throwing for 1,473 yards with 11 TDs and only 2 INTs through four games. The Broncos defense through four weeks has held opposing QBs to a 55% completion percentage. Opposing QBs have averaged 194 yards passing with a 2:5 TD:INT ratio this season, and have been sacked 17 times. Ryan historically is a .500 QB on the road, with a lower completion percentage, QB rate, and TD:INT ratio compared to being at home. Ryan is low this week but deservedly so. After this week, he can be plugged in as an every week starter.

If you’re looking for a cheap fill-in player this week, you should look the way of Brian Hoyer. Hoyer is fresh off of his second straight 300-yard, two TD, no INT performance and faces a Colts defense that has not been good defending the pass. Kevin White has been Hoyer’s favorite target. Although, White has been place on IR after breaking his fibula. Hoyer still has Eddie Royal and Alshon Jeffery to throw to, and now has some stability in the run game with Jordan Howard performing better than expected. He is a sneaky play this week.

The Lions at Eagles matchup pits two more solid QBs against one another with Matt Stafford taking on Carson Wentz. One of these QBs will have it easy this week, while the other will have a more difficult time making plays. The Lions have been the second most generous team to the QB position this season, and is fresh off a beating from Hoyer. Aaron Rodgers and the dysfunctional Packers offense put up 34 points on this defense as well. Fresh off his bye week, Wentz will be able to step in and dominate this week. He is justly ranked. Stafford may be ranked a little bit high given this matchup. The Eagles have let up the least amount of fantasy points to QBs this season, headlined by limiting Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers to three points in Week 3. Stafford’s career record at home is much better than on the road, so there is a chance he plays well but it will not come easy.
