RotoBaller PGA: One And Done Staff Picks - 3M Open

The PGA RotoBaller staff digs into their One and Done selections for the 3M Open. Here are some under the radar plays and picks for this week's event.

Here at RotoBaller, we are always searching for ways to give our readers the best fantasy sports content possible. With that goal in mind, we are very proud of our weekly PGA “One and Done” column. In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

Sit down boys and girls, as I tell you a story about the Memorial. There's no way around it... my stay at Xander Island was miserable. I experienced a typhoon-like atmosphere on Thursday but somehow got my room comped for the weekend. Not being in the mood to do much, I stayed inside for the final two days and watched videos of Joe and Josh frolicking across a random bridge. Oh, how nice it all looked.

I packed my bags up early on Sunday morning and headed back home before the inclement weather struck down again. And while some might not believe the story I am about to tell, the treasure we discussed finding at Xander Island came to fruition. In a miraculous turn of events, Joe and Josh's lack of social distancing resulted in their feet getting tangled as they were trying to escape the poor weather, and the money they were holding onto flew into the air - straight into the same typhoon that disturbed me on Thursday. However, something was different this time around. I sat there and watched this treacherous storm transform into a rainbow right in front of my eyes, traveling a distance of over six feet and leaving a pot of gold worth over $171,000 right at my feet.

Some might say this tale is untrue, but that is ok by me. I have my newfound fortune that is worth more than both Josh and Joe possess and good luck finding where I have buried it. MWHAHAHAHAHA!

One and Done Selections - The Memorial

Joe Nicely - Sam Burns

Alternate - Erik Van Rooyen

This is a juicy, juicy, bounce-back spot for Tony Finau - a player that I still have left at my disposal in this OAD contest - and I may look back at not using him this week with regret, but I need to socially...ummm...emotionally distance myself from one of my favorite players after last week’s collapse at the Memorial, as my heart just can’t take more disappointment from one of the best human beings on the PGA Tour. So, since I’m emotionally hedging against Tony, I’m gonna take an outside-of-the-box route for the 3M Open and go with Sam Burns.

If you don’t think there’s a youth movement taking place on the PGA Tour, just take a look at some recent winners and their ages: Daniel Berger - 27, Bryson DeChambeau - 26, Collin Morikawa - 23, and Jon Rahm - 25. Now, I don’t think Sam Burns belongs in the same echelon as the players mentioned above, but the 23-year-old is certainly an exciting prospect with an amateur pedigree that includes first team All-America honors, the Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year award, and four individual NCAA wins as an LSU Tiger. He’s already logged six top-10 finishes in his young pro career, with one of them coming in this event last year, and he represents the evolution of the game in the form of bombing it off the tee (averaging 311.1 yards driving distance), while also possessing tremendous touch on the greens (29th on the PGA Tour in SG: Putting this season).

This TPC Twin Cities layout is very generous off the tee and provided a breakout spot for both Matthew Wolff and Collin Morikawa last year. I think bombing it long and racking up birdies will be the order of the week at the 3M and Burns fits the mold perfectly. -Joe Nicely

Spencer Aguiar - Bubba Watson

Alternate - Will Gordon

The 3M Open is a weak field and features an overall purse that is nothing to write home about. I believe all those factors should lend to a smaller name being taken for the event, but the player I would have wanted to slot into this location has already been selected previously by me in the season (Jhonattan Vegas).

That factor puts me in a slight bind, although it isn't anything that I can't work around with the plethora of names available in Minnesota. A player such as Will Gordon, Doc Redman or Max Homa all entered my mind as potential routes to go down this week, but I am going to go with the golfer who might have the best win equity in this field when we remove Dustin Johnson from the equation.

While Bubba Watson's game hasn't been perfect since the return of golf, there are a few things that should be viewed as a positive - most notably his 7.8 strokes earned with his irons at the Memorial last week. When we add to that his dominance off the tee and par-five scoring ability, a picture starts getting painted of a player who is a few good putting rounds away from striking gold. I'm all about my hidden treasure and hope that Bubba can plunder a payday that equates to a victory.  -Spencer Aguiar

Yearly Earnings - $3,101,193

Yearly Cuts Made - 13/16

Josh Bennett - Tony Finau

Alternate - Max Homa

There’s not really a better opportunity for Tony to actually win a tournament than this one. It’s obvious he has issues so far in his career with closing on Sundays, but it’s not usually in fields that look like this one. His skill level greatly stands out in this one and there only are a couple other guys that are in his class (I’ve already used two of them in OAD so they’re out the window). Not only is he just a better golfer than most of the field, this course sets up perfectly for his game. It’s very long, but he can shrink it with his length. He’s been experimenting with the Bryson approach and going full on off the tee and he should be able to do that a lot here with how wide the fairways are. As long as he doesn’t get too sideways, he will have a huge advantage over the field by hitting it that far. On top of the distance, he’s always been a good ball-striker which will be helpful this weekend, so all he really needs to do is have a decent week on the greens and he should be able to take this one down. - Josh Bennett
