1 hour agoThe Philadelphia Phillies signed free-agent right-hander Taijuan Walker to a four-year deal worth $72 million on Tuesday, according to sources. Walker will join the division-rival Phillies after spending the last two seasons with the New York Mets. He was an All-Star for the first time in his career in 2021 but he actually pitched better in 2022, going 12-5 with a 3.49 ERA (3.65 FIP), a 1.19 WHIP, 132 strikeouts and 45 walks in 157 1/3 innings pitched over 29 starts. The 30-year-old should become the Phillies' No. 3 starter heading into the 2023 season behind Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola. Walker's fantasy value won't change all that much heading into next year while staying in the National League East division.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com - Jeff Passan

3 hours agoThe San Francisco Giants and free-agent outfielder Mitch Haniger agreed to a three-year, $43.5 million deal on Tuesday, according to sources. Signing Haniger doesn't take the Giants out of the running for superstar free-agent slugger Aaron Judge. The Giants have been pursuing both Haniger and Judge on the open market. San Fran was able to land Haniger at a pretty decent cost because of a long list of injuries early in his career. The 31-year-old managed to play in only 57 games in 2022, hitting .246/.308/.429 with 11 home runs, 34 RBI and 31 runs scored in 247 plate appearances. Haniger can be a real fantasy contributor if he stays healthy, as evidenced by a 2021 season in which he slashed .253/.318/.485 with an .804 OPS, aa career-high 39 home runs, 100 RBI and 110 runs scored in 157 games.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com - Jeff Passan

4 hours agoThe Chicago Cubs and free-agent outfielder Cody Bellinger agreed to a one-year, $17.5 million deal on Tuesday, according to sources familiar with the deal. The Los Angeles Dodgers chose to non-tender the 2019 National League MVP after he hit just .210/.265/.389 with 19 home runs, 68 RBI, 70 runs scored and 14 stolen bases in 550 plate appearances over 144 games in 2022. That was after he batted .165 with 10 homers and 36 RBI in 95 games in 2021. The 27-year-old is hoping to reset his value with a much better 2023 campaign, and he figures to be an every-day starting center fielder for the rebuilding Cubs. The Colorado Rockies were discussing a one-year deal with Bellinger before he chose the Cubs, while the Toronto Blue Jays were also interested.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com - Jeff Passan

7 hours agoThe Texas Rangers signed free-agent left-hander Andrew Heaney to an undisclosed deal on Tuesday, according to a source. Heaney already had a few three-year offers on the open market, but he was pushing for a fourth year. It's unclear if he got that with Texas after throwing 75 innings for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022. The Toronto Blue Jays and San Francisco Giants were also interested in the 31-year-old southpaw. Starting pitching has been a priority for Texas this offseason, as they've already traded for Jake Odorizzi and signed Jacob deGrom to a five-year deal. Injuries limited Heaney to just 16 outings (14 starts) in 2022 for the Dodgers, but he had a strong 3.10 ERA (3.75 FIP), a 1.09 WHIP and 110 strikeouts in 72 2/3 innings when he was on the mound.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com - Alden Gonzalez

7 hours agoCleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase was named the 2022 Mariano Rivera American League Reliever of the Year Award on Tuesday. Clase is a first-time recipient of the award, and the 24-year-old was also named an All-Star for the first time in his career in 2022. He had a sparkling 1.36 ERA and led the majors with 42 saves for the Guardians. His 77 appearances were tied with Toronto Blue Jays reliever Adam Cimber for the most by any player, and Clase's 67 games finished were 13 more than any other pitcher. In the last two seasons, Clase has posted a 1.33 ERA in 148 outings while racking up 77 strikeouts in 72 2/3 innings. Clase has become one of the most attractive closers in fantasy.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Paul Casella

7 hours agoNew York Mets closer Edwin Diaz was named the 2022 recipient of the Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year Award on Tuesday. Diaz won the American League version of the away back in 2018 with the Seattle Mariners, and he joins Craig Kimbrel as the only players to win the award in each league. The hard-throwing right-hander had a ridiculous 118 strikeouts in just 62 innings last season, resulting in an average of 17.1 strikeouts per nine innings. It's the highest single-season rate by any pitcher in major-league history with at least 60 innings pitched. The Mets should be one of the better teams in baseball again in 2023, making Diaz an elite fantasy closer.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Paul Casella

7 hours agoPittsburgh Pirates catcher Endy Rodriguez broke out last season by hitting .323 with 25 home runs, 95 RBI and a .966 OPS while climbing three levels of the minors. He became the team's top prospect and finished the year with six games at Triple-A Indianapolis. There's little doubt he'll reach the big leagues in 2023, but manager Derek Shelton said his exact role is still to be determined. Rodriguez played 75 of his 125 games at catcher last year but also saw time at first base, second base and left field, in addition to designated hitter. The 22-year-old is extremely athletic and versatile, making him even more intriguing as a long-term fantasy asset. It's still possible Rodriguez settles in as an every-day catcher at the next level.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Baseball America - Kyle Glaser

7 hours agoThe Arizona Diamondbacks are among the teams talking with the Oakland Athletics about possibly trading for catcher Sean Murphy, according to sources. It comes as somewhat of a surprising, considering they already have Carson Kelly at the position. Murphy slashed .250/.332/.426 and was among the most valuable all-around backstops in the big leagues in 2022. He's been a very popular trade asset with three seasons of club control remaining, with at least eight other teams having been publicly linked to him. General manager Mike Hazen is willing to part with one of the team's young outfielders, and Hazen is also open to trading younger prospects further away from the majors. Kelly hit just .211 overall last year and has been up-and-down at the plate in his four years in Arizona.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Arizona Republic - Nick Piecoro

8 hours agoThe Cleveland Guardians signed free-agent first baseman Josh Bell to a two-year deal worth $33 million on Tuesday. The deal includes an opt-out clause after next season. It was reported earlier in the day that Bell was among the players on Cleveland's list. The 30-year-old switch-hitting first baseman hit .301 with 14 home runs, 57 RBI and 52 runs scored in 103 games for the Washington Nationals in the first half of the season before being traded to the San Diego Padres. In 53 regular season games for the Friars, Bell was a liability at the plate, hitting just .192/.316/.271 with three homers, 14 RBI and 26 runs scored. Bell will give the Guardians some much-needed power, and they'll be hoping that he can offer more middle-of-the-order protection for third baseman Jose Ramirez.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Network - Jon Heyman

8 hours agoFollowing a breakout season in which Colorado Rockies infielder Ezequiel Tovar stormed through the upper levels of the minors and made his major-league debut, manager Bud Black said the 21-year-old is "tracking" towards being the team's Opening Day shortstop in 2023. "He showed enough to us in what he did during the course of the year," Black said. "All our evaluators and player development people think that he is a guy that we can count on moving forward." The Rockies' No. 1 prospect hit .318 in 66 games at Double-A Hartford before a groin injury sidelined him for more than two months. Tovar had a hit in six of his first nine big-league games last year, and his fantasy stock is obviously on the rise as a potential every-day player right out of the gates in 2023.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Baseball America - Kyle Glaser

8 hours agoVeteran free-agent corner infielder Evan Longoria is talking to five teams on the free-agent market and is looking to play for a contender. Longoria became a free agent after the 2022 season when the San Francisco Giants declined his $13 million club option for 2023. The 37-year-old is no longer in his prime and played fewer than 90 games in each of the last two years in San Francisco. He mostly dealt with a thumb injury this season and finished with a .244/.315/.451 slash line with 14 home runs, 42 RBI and 31 runs scored in 298 plate appearances and 89 games. The Giants could bring him back on a cheaper deal. At this point in his career, Longoria is better suited to be a full-time designated hitter.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Network - Jon Heyman

8 hours agoAgent Scott Boras said that the Boston Red Sox remain engaged on trying to re-sign shortstop Xander Bogaerts. Nobody is really expecting the Red Sox and Bogaerts to reunite, especially after the Philadelphia Phillies gave Trea Turner an 11-year, $300 million deal on Monday at the first day of the Winter Meetings in San Diego. Bogaerts has a very robust market as one of the top shortstops available on the open market, and teams like the Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres have been on his trail. As expected, the 30-year-old declined his $20 million option for the 2023 season. If Boston doesn't somehow bring Bogaerts back, Trevor Story is expected to move to the 6 next year.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Boston Globe - Alex Speier

8 hours agoThe San Diego Padres signed free-agent outfielder David Dahl to a minor-league deal on Tuesday. Dahl spent the 2022 season toiling in the minor leagues for the Milwaukee Brewers and Washington Nationals, where he hit a combined .279/.345/.442 with 10 home runs, 51 RBI, 54 runs scored and four stolen bases in 359 plate appearances over 85 games for Triple-A Nashville and Triple-A Rochester. The 28-year-old left-handed hitter opted out of his contract with the Nationals in August to become a free agent. Dahl was an All-Star with the Colorado Rockies in his third MLB season in 2019, but injuries have defined his career to this point and he has played in 100 games at the MLB level just once in five seasons.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Roster Moves

8 hours agoThe Pittsburgh Pirates signed left-hander Jarlin Garcia on Tuesday, pending a physical, according to a source. The deal is reportedly for one year and $2.5 million, and the Pirates will hold a $3.25 million option for the 2024 season, according to The Athletic's Rob Biertempfel. Garcia had a 3.74 ERA (4.27 FIP), a 1.20 WHIP, one save and 56 strikeouts in 65 innings over 58 relief appearances for the San Francisco Giants in 2022. He was designated for assignment last month and become a free agent when he cleared waivers. The 29-year-old won't be in the saves picture in Pittsburgh, so he won't have any fantasy relevance entering 2023.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Pittsburgh PG - Jason Mackey

8 hours agoAccording to a tweet from ESPN's Kiley McDaniel, the Pittsburgh Pirates reportedly have an agreement with right-hander Vince Velasquez. McDaniel tweeted the following on Tuesday: "Source: Free agent RHP Vince Velasquez has an agreement on a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates." Velasquez appeared in 27 games for the Chicago White Sox last season, nine of which were starts. He pitched to a 4.78 ERA and a 4.25 FIP in 75.1 innings of work for the American League Central franchise while logging 69 strikeouts compared to just 25 walks. The veteran also registered a hold while pitching out of the bullpen.--Ben Rosener - RotoBallerSource: Kiley McDaniel
