13 hours agoContract-extension negotiations between the Pittsburgh Pirates and outfielder Bryan Reynolds are at an "impasse," causing Reynolds to request a trade. The word is that the Pirates still aren't planning to trade him this offseason, but many teams -- including the New York Mets, San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays -- could use the star center fielder. Unless a team blows the Pirates out of the water with a trade offer for Reynolds, the 27-year-old isn't expected to go anywhere this winter. After his first All-Star campaign in 2021, Reynolds followed it up with a .262/.345/.461 slash line with an .807 OPS, a career-high 27 home runs, 62 RBI, 74 runs scored and seven stolen bases in 145 games in 2022.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Network - Jon Heyman

13 hours agoThe Baltimore Orioles agreed to an undisclosed one-year deal, pending a physical, with free-agent right-hander Kyle Gibson on Saturday, according to a source. Gibson isn't a big fantasy name, but he should be able to eat some innings for the O's in 2023. The 35-year-old spent last season with the Philadelphia Phillies, going 10-8 with a 5.05 ERA (4.28 FIP), a 1.34 WHIP, 144 strikeouts and 48 walks in 167 2/3 innings pitched over his 31 starts. Gibson has a below-average strikeout rate and probably won't fare too well in another hitter-friendly ballpark in the tough American League East. Gibson will likely take up residence at the back of the Orioles starting rotation next season.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Athletic - Ken Rosenthal

15 hours agoThe Milwaukee Brewers signed infielder Eddy Alvarez to a minor-league deal on Saturday that includes an invite to major-league spring training next year. Alvarez medaled in the 2014 Olympics for the United States as a short-track speed skater and in baseball in the 2020 Olympics for Team USA. The 32-year-old left-handed-hitting infielder played in 14 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022, going 4-for-25 (.160) with no homers, three RBI, a run scored, three RBI and nine strikeouts in his 27 plate appearances. He'll give the Brewers some infield versatility as minor-league depth in 2023. Alvarez has hit .183/.262/.262 with a homer, 11 RBI, 15 runs scored and four stolen bases in 50 major-league games in three seasons.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Todd Rosiak

15 hours agoThe New York Yankees are believed to be on the list of teams to visit with free-agent outfielder Brandon Nimmo. The fit is somewhat curious, though, unless the Yankees are unable to re-sign superstar slugger Aaron Judge. The San Francisco Giants, Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets are also believed to be involved with Nimmo. The 29-year-old outfielder is one of the best on-base men in all of baseball, so he'd be a great fit at the top of any contending team's lineup. Nimmo has a .385 career on-base in seven big-league seasons with the Mets, and he had a .274/.367/.433 slash line with an .800 OPS, 16 home runs, a league-leading seven triples, 64 RBI, 102 runs scored and three stolen bases in 673 plate appearances and 151 games.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Network - Jon Heyman

15 hours agoThe New York Mets and New York Yankees are among the teams talking to the top two remaining free-agent starting pitchers. At the moment, the Mets seem more intrigued by right-hander Justin Verlander, while the Yankees seem more focused on Carlos Rodon. The Baltimore Orioles are among the many teams in on Rodon. The Houston Astros and Verlander are far apart in talks, which has opened the door for other teams to swoop in on Verlander, the 2022 American League Cy Young winner. The Mets might be the favorites to land one of Verlander or Rodon now that Jacob deGrom signed a five-year deal with the Texas Rangers. Verlander will require a shorter-term contract than Rodon given his age.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Network - Jon Heyman

15 hours agoThe New York Mets and Texas Rangers are among many teams that are interested in free-agent right-hander Jameson Taillon. He has a huge market and will get an extremely good deal in this market. Pitching is at a premium this offseason. The Rangers have already signed Jacob deGrom to a five-year deal and also traded for Jake Odorizzi, but they may not be done adding to their starting rotation for 2023 and beyond. The Mets are looking to pair another ace alongside Max Scherzer after losing deGrom, and they appear to be choosing between either Justin Verlander or Carlos Rodon. Taillon went 14-5 for the New York Yankees in 2022 with a 3.91 ERA (3.94 FIP), a 1.13 WHIP, 151 strikeouts and 32 walks in 177 1/3 innings over his 32 starts.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Network - Jon Heyman

15 hours agoThe Baltimore Orioles, who are searching for starting pitching in free agency, met via Zoom on Friday with free-agent right-hander Noah Syndergaard. Thor spent the 2022 season with the Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies. The 30-year-old was mostly a league-average starter, going a combined 10-10 with a 3.94 ERA (3.83 FIP), a 1.25 WHIP, 95 strikeouts and 31 walks in 134 2/3 innings over 25 appearances (24 starts). Syndergaard's velocity was down this year after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and he was moved to a bullpen role for the Phillies in their run to the World Series. There's not a ton of fantasy upside here, especially if he were to move to the tough American League East.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: New York Post - Joel Sherman

15 hours agoThe New York Mets have moved their attention to free-agent starting pitcher Justin Verlander after right-hander Jacob deGrom signed a five-year deal with the Texas Rangers on Friday. The Mets never got to make a final offer to deGrom before he chose the Rangers. Verlander is reportedly seeking a three-year deal, which the Houston Astros don't want to do, which has opened the door for other teams to jump in. The Mets will likely have to pay close to the $37 million per year that deGrom got for the Rangers to land Verlander, but a deal for Verlander won't be nearly as long as deGrom's. With deGrom leaving for the American League, the Mets are looking for another top arm to pair with Max Scherzer at the top of their starting rotation for the 2023 season.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: SNY - Andy Martino

15 hours agoThe San Diego Padres have met with free-agent shortstop Trea Turner twice in person before next week's Winter Meetings in San Diego, according to major-league sources. It's unclear exactly when the Padres met with Turner, but the fact that there have been multiple meetings suggests some level of mutual interest. The Padres have also expressed interest in another top free-agent shortstop in Xander Bogaerts. Turner is a candidate for possibly $300 million, and he appears to be San Diego's preference. The Padres already have two shortstops in Fernando Tatis Jr. and Ha-Seong Kim and two $300 million players, but they cannot be ruled out as a factor for Turner. The Friars traded Turner to the Nationals in 2015 and have indicated notable interest in a potential reunion in recent years.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Athletic - Dennis Lin and Ken Rosenthal

1 day agoThe Texas Rangers have signed right-hander Jacob deGrom to a five-year, $185 million deal on Friday, according to sources. His physical is passed and the deal is done. The contract includes a conditional sixth-year option that would take the total deal to $222 million, and it includes a full no-trade clause. Despite dealing with plenty of injuries over the last several years, deGrom priced him out of New York Mets owner Steve Cohen's range this offseason. The four-time All-Star and two-time Cy Young winner was still great when healthy in 2022, going 5-4 with a 3.08 ERA (2.13 FIP), a 0.75 WHIP, 102 strikeouts and just eight walks in 11 starts (64 1/3 innings). He'll now become Texas' ace for a Rangers team desperate for better starting pitching. deGrom is a risk-reward injury-prone fantasy ace.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com - Jeff Passan

1 day agoHouston Astros catcher Jason Castro officially announced his retirement from professional baseball on Friday on his personal Twitter account. "Today, I officially announce my retirement from Major League Baseball. Over the last 15 years of pro ball, I have been blessed with many incredible opportunities and have met so many people along the way that helped me achieve more than I could have ever imagined," Castro wrote. The 35-year-old backstop will finish his career with 12 seasons played at the highest level and a slash line of .227/.312/.387 with 97 home runs, 325 RBI, 368 runs scored and six stolen bases for the Astros (eight seasons), Minnesota Twins, San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Angels.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Jason Castro on Twitter

1 day agoThe Baltimore Orioles claimed first baseman Lewin Diaz off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday, according to sources. Diaz was designated for assignment by the Pirates earlier this week after the landed Ji-Man Choi in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays. The 26-year-old Dominican slugger spent the last three years with the Miami Marlins, struggling to the tune of a .181/.227/.340 slash line with 13 home runs, 27 RBI, 30 runs scored and 99 strikeouts in 343 plate appearances over 112 games. He's out of minor-league options, so he'll stand a decent chance of making the big-league roster to open the 2023 season if he shows some signs of life at the plate in spring training.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Sports Grid - Craig Mish

1 day agoThe Philadelphia Phillies claimed outfielder Jake Cave off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, according to president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. The Phillies' 40-man roster now stands at 38 players with the addition of Cave. Baltimore claimed Cave off waivers from the Minnesota Twins right after the end of the 2022 season, but he'll now be joining the Phillies for next year. The 29-year-old left-handed batter played in 54 games for the Twins in 2022, batting .213/.260/.384 with five home runs, 20 RBI, 17 runs scored and two stolen bases in 177 plate appearances. He'll serve as outfield depth with his new organization. Cave is a .235/.297/.411 hitter in five major-league seasons, all with the Twins.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Phillies Twitter

1 day agoThe New York Yankees are in on free-agent starting pitchers Justin Verlander and Carlos Rodon. They aren't as much in on right-hander Jacob deGrom for what he sees ($40 million-plus). Outfielder Aaron Judge remains the main target for the Bombers, but the Yankees also want to add a big starter this offseason as well. Verlander is reportedly seeking a three-year deal for around $130 million in free agency, and the Houston Astros don't want to give him three years, so it could open up the door for the Yankees or another team to swoop in. Adding an arm like Verlander or Rodon to pair with ace Gerrit Cole would immediately upgrade New York's starting rotation in 2023.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Network - Jon Heyman

1 day agoThe Boston Red Sox agreed to a two-year, $17.5 million deal with right-handed reliever Chris Martin on Friday, pending a physical, according to sources familiar with the deal. The 36-year-old was excellent for the Los Angeles Dodgers after a deadline trade and parlayed that performance into a multi-year deal on the open market this offseason. He began the 2022 campaign with the Chicago Cubs and had a 4.31 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 31 1/3 relief innings before joining the Dodgers in the second half. With LA, he allowed just four earned runs on 12 hits while walking one and striking out 34 hitters in 24 2/3 innings. Martin will look to help a Boston bullpen that was pretty bad last season, and he should pitch in high-leverage situations.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com - Jeff Passan
