Wilyer Abreu Starting Rehab Assignment on Tuesday
Wilyer Abreu (oblique) is starting a minor-league rehab assignment with them on Tuesday night. Abreu was cleared to resume playing in games after he started swinging a bat last Friday. The 25-year-old Venezuelan outfielder was put on the 10-day injured list with a mild oblique strain, but he could return as early as this weekend against the San Francisco Giants if he doesn't suffer a setback at Worcester this week. Prior to his oblique pull, Abreu was hitting .245 (51-for-208) with 13 home runs, 32 RBI, 28 runs scored and four stolen bases in 64 games in his third year in the big leagues. He has been productive in the first half, but the presence of top prospect Roman Anthony in Boston's outfield now could mean less playing time for Abreu when he comes off the IL.
