Troy Tulowitzki 2019 Outlook: Not Ranked Tulo(w) Enough
6 years agoTroy Tulowitzki was looking like a possible late-round contributor heading into 2019. But then, the Yankees signed DJ LeMahieu to a 2-year $24 million contract. Initially, with Didi Gregorius sidelined until as late as August, the veteran shortstop seemed like he would see enough plate appearances to maybe make an impact in deep leagues. However, the Yankees infield has to find a spot for their shiny, new infielder, and their young studs, Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar. Tulo only signed for the league minimum, and with his injury history, he’s going to be the odd man out, especially when Sir Didi returns. The decline was apparent even before he had to miss the entire 2018 season due to injury. In 260 plate appearances during 2017, he slugged .373, had an OPS of .678 and his soft contact rate increased significantly (24.8%). His elite defense was also starting to disappear, dropping all the way to a .970 fielding percentage. A decline in production, playing time concerns, and injury history, are all reasons to stay away from the 34-year-old on draft day. He can be acquired on off the waivers when you see an opportunity for consistent playing time.
