Trey Lance Splits First-Team Reps With Jimmy Garoppolo
3 years agoSan Francisco 49ers rookie first-round quarterback Trey Lance split first-team repetitions at practice on Wednesday and Thursday. Lance spent a short series with the first-team on Thursday while Garoppolo worked with the second-team in red-zone drills. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has yet to name a starter under center, but it's expected that they'll go with Garoppolo, at least to start the season. However, Shanahan has hinted that the Niners could use Lance and Jimmy G in a manner similar to how the Saints used Drew Brees and Taysom Hill in recent years. Garoppolo has a lengthy injury history and has yet to prove he can attack deep down the field consistently. Lance might only see some opportunities in sub-packages early on, but he has the clear upside advantage over Garoppolo because of his dual-threat abilities.
