Shawn Williams 2020 Outlook: Strong Tackler Fighting To Keep Starting Job
5 years agoShawn Williams had a career-high 114 combined tackles (80 solo) in 2019 and has had over 100 combined tackles in each of the last two seasons. But Williams also allowed the eighth most receptions among safeties in 2019 and might be in a battle for his starting job with Jessie Bates III after the Bengals signed Vonn Bell in free agency to play strong safety, the position Williams has played each of the last four seasons in Cincy. Williams, 29, had an impressive five interceptions (one returned for a TD) last season, but that number fell to just one in 2019. He's also had just three sacks in seven seasons. Williams is a strong option for tackles at the safety spot, but his weakness in pass coverage may leave him vulnerable to losing his starting role in 2020. Bell is the most athletic and versatile safety in this trio in Cincy.
