Panthers Hire Matt Rhule As Next Head Coach
5 years agoThe Carolina Panthers agreed to a seven-year, $60 million deal with Baylor coach Matt Rhule on Tuesday for him to be their next head coach, according to league sources. The deal could be worth up to $70 million with incentives. Rhule spent one year in the NFL in 2012 as an offensive line assistant with the Giants. He turned the programs around at Temple before moving to Baylor and going 11-3 this past season. The 44-year-old will take over a Carolina team that was 5-11 in 2019 and that has had three losing seasons in the last four years since going to Super Bowl 50. One of his biggest decisions will be deciding the future of quarterback Cam Newton, who is rehabbing from Lisfranc surgery on his foot. Rhule is an offensive mind who is a big believer in the run-pass option.
