Padres Sign International Shortstop Leodalis De Vries
11 months agoA year after signing catcher Ethan Salas for $5.6 million, the San Diego Padres signed switch-hitting shortstop Leodalis De Vries, another player widely considered the top prospect in his international class. De Vries has good speed and the upside to hit 20-plus home runs. He received a $4.2 million signing bonus and has modeled parts of his game after Cleveland Guardians infielder Jose Ramirez. The 17-year-old has a chance to bypass the Dominican Summer League and start his career either in the Arizona Complex League or at Low-A Lake Elsinore. De Vries could report to minor-league spring training in Arizona after spending the next handful of weeks acclimating to the organization at its academy in the Dominican Republic. He could be one of the best prospects in baseball after a couple more seasons.
