Jack Flaherty 2023 Outlook: Former Brilliance Gives Hope For Potential Turnaround Season
2 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jack Flaherty is coming off a miserable 2022 in which his injury woes continued to hamper him. He threw only 36 innings, going 2-1 with a 4.25 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, and 33 strikeouts. He walked too many batters (13.2%) while striking out a career-low 19.8%. His advanced numbers didn't look any better, with a 4.94 xERA and 4.97 FIP. Flaherty simply hasn't been the same pitcher since the shortened 2020 season, and multiple injuries since then haven't helped him either. All that being said, we all know the potential Flaherty possesses. If he can get healthy and pitch anywhere close to that level, he could be a terrific value at his 227.4 ADP. That is certainly a big if considering he hasn't come anywhere close to that level since, but a slightly positive sign is that he finished 2022 strong, posting two quality starts in which he struck out 15 batters in 12 innings. It's a small sample, but it's a glimmer of hope that he can be a productive pitcher again. Don't expect much from him, but he has upside and his ADP makes him a near-zero risk option.
