Isaiah Spiller 2023 Player Outlook: Pushing For Backup Role In Second NFL Season
1 year agoThe Los Angeles Chargers selected running back Isaiah Spiller in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft out of Texas A&M, but he didn't have much of a role in his first season in the NFL. Spiller only saw action in six games behind Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelley and turned his 18 carries into 41 yards (2.3 yards per attempt) and no touchdowns while also catching three passes for 13 yards. The 21-year-old was often a healthy scratch and lost out on playing time to Kelley, who was more trustworthy in protecting the QB on passing downs. Despite a forgettable rookie campaign, Spiller could push Kelley for the backup role now that Sony Michel is out of the picture. He has work to do in pass-protection duties, but he's still very young, and it probably won't take much to surpass Kelley. Still, as long as Ekeler remains healthy, he's likely going to continue leaving very little scraps for anyone else in LA's backfield.
