George Springer Could Find A Team This Week
4 years agoFree-agent outfielder George Springer could make his decision on a team this week, according to multiple industry sources. The Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets remain the two front-runners, with both teams offering nine figures. The only things stopping the Mets pursuit of Springer may be their desire not to exceed the competitive balance tax threshold and the possibility of having no designated hitter in the National League in 2021. New York could pitch Springer on a stretched contract similar to the one the Yankees gave second baseman DJ LeMahieu (six years, $90 million). The Blue Jays could have the edge with far more room to operate under the tax threshold. Springer's fantasy value shouldn't change all that much in either spot, although Toronto's hitting environment would be a bit more beneficial. Either way, he's coming off the board in the top five rounds as a top-15 fantasy outfielder.
