Danny Santana Reaches Deal With Red Sox
4 years agoThe Boston Red Sox signed free-agent super-utility man Danny Santana to a one-year deal with a base salary of $1.75 million on Thursday. He'll receive $1 million in incentives and a $100,000 bonus if he starts in Triple-A to allow him extra time to get ready for the season. The deal also includes an opt-out date. The 30-year-old broke out with Texas in 2019 with an .857 OPS, a career-high 28 home runs and 21 stolen bases in 130 games, but he played in just 15 games in 2020 due to an elbow injury and hit .145/.238/.273 with one homer and seven RBI. With better health, Santana could bounce back, but he'll have plenty of competition for playing time in Boston when considering the team also has super-utility types in Marwin Gonzalez and Kike Hernandez. Santana's best chance at playing time will be in center field with Jackie Bradley Jr. leaving in free agency.
