D.J. Moore 2022 NFL Player Outlook - Overcoming Substandard Quarterback Play
3 years agoCarolina Panthers wide receiver D.J. Moore turned 25 in April but has already exceeded 1,150 yards in his last three seasons. This includes the 1,157 (68.1 per game) that he accumulated during 2021, which launched him into the top 10 for a third consecutive year. His yardage was a byproduct of extensive targeting as Moore finished sixth overall with 163 (9.6 per game), while he was one of just five receivers who collected 10+ targets in 10 different games. Moore also finished third with a career-high 1,727 air yards, sixth with a 39.9% share of air yards, and 11th with a career-best 93 receptions (5.5 per game). Moore also vaulted to WR18 in scoring and generated these numbers despite the encumbrances of substandard quarterback play. This extended an ongoing issue that Moore has encountered during his four seasons with the team. The Panthers addressed the position by acquiring Baker Mayfield from the Cleveland Browns and drafting Matt Corral in Round 3 of the 2022 NFL Draft (94th overall). Mayfield is the favorite to be the team's starting quarterback but reportedly hasn't looked good at the start of training camp. That will present Moore with a familiar challenge as he must overcome the inexperience of Corral or the deficiencies of Sam Darnold and Mayfield under center. However, he has contended with similar hurdles in previous seasons and should deliver high-end WR2 production once again. That should compel you to target him at his current ADPs in dynasty start-up drafts (49/WR18), and best-ball leagues (46/WR16).
