Cubs Non-Tender Kyle Schwarber
4 years agoThe Chicago Cubs non-tendered 2016 World Series hero Kyle Schwarber on Wednesday, making him a free agent after six seasons with the team. On the flip side, Chicago tendered contracts to 2016 National League MVP Kris Bryant, shortstop Javier Baez and catcher Willson Contreras. The 27-year-old Schwarber was in his last year of arbitration, but the Cubs didn't want to pay him $8-9 million in 2021. The Cubbies remain open to bringing him back at a lesser deal after he hit .230 with 121 home runs in 551 regular season games for Chicago. The lefty masher was mostly known for having a .981 OPS in 24 playoff games. Schwarber hit 64 homers in 2018 and 2019, but he batted just .188 with 11 home runs in 59 games in 2020.
