Cardinals Bring Back Adam Wainwright
4 years agoThe St. Louis Cardinals are re-signing starting pitcher Adam Wainwright to a one-year deal on Thursday believed to be worth $8 million. The 39-year-old was the team's most reliable pitcher in the shortened 2020 season, throwing two shutouts and posting a 3.15 ERA in his 15th season with St. Louis. The three-time All-Star made his debut back in 2005 and has spent his entire career with the Red Birds. Wainwright's 3.15 ERA last year was his lowest mark since 2015, though, and it came with a 4.10 FIP and just 7.4 strikeouts per nine innings, so fantasy managers shouldn't expect a repeat over a full season in 2021. However, the veteran right-hander isn't a bad late-round flier in deep mixed and NL-only leagues for his experience. With Wainwright back in the fold, the Cards will now hope to re-sign long-time Cardinals legend Yadier Molina at catcher.
