Aroldis Chapman 2020 Outlook: Remains Elite Closer Worth Drafting Early
5 years agoNew York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman is a diamond in the rough in terms of the current closing landscape. Few other closers have been as consistently dominant the past few years while checking every box going into 2020 like Chapman does. Chapman converted 37 of his 42 save opportunities in 2019 while posting a 2.21 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with 85 strikeouts in 57 innings. He improved his command in 2019 as his walk percentage dropped from 14.2% in 2018 to 10.6% last year. He also limited hard contact last year better than he did in 2018, a surprising feat while the league had a historic power output in 2019. He dropped his hard-hit rate against from 32.1% in 2018 to 29.3% in 2019, while his exit velocity against dropped from 88.7 in 2018 to 85.9 last year. This season, the Yankees should be every bit as good as they were in 2019, if not better, which means Chapman should be a shoe-in for 40-plus save opportunities as long as he remains healthy and effective. For categories and rotisserie leagues, having an elite closer goes a long way so you don't need to sort through the mess of committee-run bullpens as aggressively as other owners. Chapman is worth targeting at the top of the sixth round in categories and rotisserie leagues. In points leagues, you can wait until the end of the sixth or the seventh round, but he's still a very valuable asset.
