Adalberto Mondesi 2021 Outlook: Great Source of Almost Everything Fantasy Managers Need
4 years agoAdalberto Mondesi of the Kansas City Royals is a classic case of a player who is better in fantasy than in real life. His .256/.294/.416 triple-slash line with six homers over 233 PAs in 2020 was nothing to write home about, but his 24 SB would have been useful over a full season. Mondesi is extremely fast (29.4 ft./sec Statcast Sprint Speed in 2020) and succeeded on 75 percent of his SB attempts (eight CS) last year, so he should continue stealing plenty of bases. He also improved his average airborne exit velocity to 94.5 mph in 2020 (92.6 in 2019), allowing him to contribute some homers in addition to steals. The Royals are projected to hit him second, so he should be able to accumulate counting stats as well. Mondesi's plate discipline is terrible, with a 4.7 BB% and 30 K% backed by peripherals such as a 39.9% career chase rate and a 20.1 SwStr% in 2020. He'll torpedo your OBP, though gamers using batting average can rely on consistently elevated BABIPs to mitigate any adverse effects. Mondesi is expensive at an ADP of 25.92 and worth every penny provided you can absorb a batting average hit.
