49ers Not Ready To Announce Week 1 Starting QB
3 years agoSan Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan declined to announce the team's Week 1 starting quarterback between Jimmy Garoppolo and rookie first-rounder Trey Lance on Wednesday, but Shanahan did acknowledge that "I've got a pretty good idea" of who it will be. Garoppolo also said he has "a pretty good idea" of who the starter will be and said he's "pretty happy with where I'm at right now and everything and just the offense as a whole." Since the team drafted Lance in the first round in April, Shanahan has pointed to Garoppolo as the starter, and that would only change if Lance proves that he gives the team a better chance to win. Garoppolo remains the favorite to start, but the Niners have ramped up their efforts to get Lance involved situationally in the offense. The idea could be similar to how the Saints used Taysom Hill and Drew Brees in recent seasons. Garoppolo is a big injury risk and likes to dink and dunk down the field, which doesn't translate to a lot of fantasy success. Lance is the more intriguing long-term fantasy asset with elite arm strength and mobility, but it remains to be seen how much he'll see the field in his rookie season. Even in two-QB redraft leagues, Lance is the better speculative pick.
