Recent Fantasy Football Tight End News
Jonnu Smith, Pittsburgh Steelers
Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Jonnu Smith is reunited with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith for a third time, a partnership that has historically produced fantasy-relevant results. Smith said of his OC: "We've had a lot of success together. He will continue to move that needle, bring the best out of you, and demand the best from you. It's why we get along so well." Last year with the Miami Dolphins, Smith posted the best season of his career, with 88 catches for 884 yards and eight touchdowns.
However, in his previous stint with Arthur Smith in Atlanta, he caught 50 passes for 582 yards and three touchdowns, which was his prior best. While the Steelers have other talented pass-catchers, including tight end Pat Freiermuth, Smith's offense has historically used multiple tight-end formations more than any other team. RotoBaller currently ranks the 30-year-old as a mid-range TE2 (ranked TE20) with potential for increased production due to his familiarity with the system. Smith's history with the offense and a strong preseason make him a solid late-round tight end target and a potential starter if needed.
Kyle Pitts Sr., Atlanta Falcons
Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts Sr. could be on the move this year, according to the latest report from The Athletic's Jeff Howe. Howe reported that if the Falcons struggle early in the season and Pitts isn't clicking with new quarterback Michael Penix Jr., he could be available before the trade deadline. Pitts is coming into the final year of his huge five-year rookie contract and will earn a hefty $10.878 million salary.
While that huge price tag will make a trade tricky, teams have been willing to eat salary to add a playmaker or to add draft capital if the Falcons include a draft pick in the deal. Pitts hauled in 47 catches for 602 yards and a career-high four touchdowns while playing all 17 games last season. He posted over 600 yards in each of the last two years, but he hasn't consistently delivered on the upside that he promised as the No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. A change of scenery would be interesting for Pitts and his fantasy value as a fringe TE1 before he hits the free agent market after this season.
Ja'Tavion Sanders, Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders put together an impressive training camp, most notably as a receiver. Head coach Dave Canales recently spoke about his improvement as a pass-catcher. The second-year, fourth-round pick caught 33 passes for 342 yards and one touchdown during his rookie season. Interestingly, he did that on only 43 targets. Sanders was on the field often, but wasn't a favorite target for quarterback Bryce Young.
Following an absence in Week 13 due to an injury, Sanders was almost completely uninvolved in the Carolina passing attack. He projects to be Carolina's primary tight end in 2025, but his rookie inconsistencies have made him nothing more than a late-round dart throw in fantasy football redraft leagues.
Tyler Warren, Indianapolis Colts
Indianapolis Colts tight end Tyler Warren may exceed expectations in his first year in the National Football League. "Since arriving in Indianapolis, as expected, Warren has been a go-to target in the passing game, whether it was Daniel Jones or Anthony Richardson Sr. throwing to him," wrote Paul Bretl of Colts Wire. "Over the middle of the field, Warren presents a very difficult matchup with his combination of size and athleticism. He's also proven to be a very reliable pass-catcher and brings YAC abilities as well."
The rookie had a stellar collegiate career at Penn State, amassing 1,839 yards and 19 touchdowns off 153 catches, adding 32 carries for 224 yards and six touchdowns. With so much volatility at the tight end spot, Warren could become a week-to-week fantasy starter in most formats almost immediately. However, his ceiling may be limited if Jones or Richardson struggles during the year. The Colts will begin the 2025 campaign by hosting the Miami Dolphins in Week 1.
Terrance Ferguson, Los Angeles Rams
Los Angeles Rams tight end Terrance Ferguson showed some flashes of receiving ability during the preseason, but his blocking remains a work in progress as Los Angeles approaches Week 1. Though that might not be top-of-mind from a fantasy perspective, it will impact how much the rookie sees the field and ultimately how much he gets targeted.
Tyler Higbee is still L.A.'s top tight end, but the Rams clearly saw the promise in Ferguson by using a second-round pick to acquire him. As something of a project, Ferguson has more value in dynasty formats, but his receiving ability could present deep sleeper appeal in redraft leagues, too.
Mason Taylor, New York Jets
New York Jets rookie tight end Mason Taylor has a chance to emerge as a key contributor within the team's passing game this season. A second-round pick out of LSU, Taylor recorded 55 catches for 546 yards and two touchdowns in his final collegiate season. The 21-year-old reportedly had an impressive training camp and is poised to open the season as the Jets' top tight end.
New York does not have a clear secondary target-earner behind star wide receiver Garrett Wilson, so Taylor could conceivably work his way into a prominent role early in the year. He should not be counted on for fantasy TE1 production, but Taylor could end up being a value as a late-round flier in deeper leagues.
