2021 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational - PGA DFS Overview

TPC Southwind

7,244 Yards - Par 70 - Greens: Bermuda - Designer: Ron Pritchard

Doglegs, bunkers, and water hazards...oh my! That's what awaits players at this former Memphis dairy farm. TPC Southwind winds through lakes, streams, and ponds with the danger of water always lurking...especially on the par-3 11th hole that is almost a 'baby brother' to the famous 17th island green at TPC Sawgrass. Many of Southwind's par-4's have dogleg tendencies, which forces the bombers to throttle down a bit, though we have seen long hitters like Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, and Brooks Koepka play very well here. Precise ball striking will be key, as the water hazards and almost 100 bunkers in play demand accuracy. Southwind is a long-ish Par 70, made all the more difficult by the winding layout.

Both these fairways and greens are tough to hit, so I will primarily be targeting ball strikers with sharp iron games. Since this is a WGC event with no cut, I'll be willing to sacrifice consistency a bit in order to target players that can rack up birdies. We have eight par-4s that are 450 yards or longer, so I'll lean towards guys that fair well on long par-4s

Fantasy Golf Lineup Picks for FanDuel (PGA DFS)

We have tons of great weekly PGA articles, DFS analysis, tools and DFS advice. Be sure to read our other fantastic articles regarding this week's event including DFS lineup picks for DraftKings/FanDuel, betting advice and DFS prop picks.

High-Priced FanDuel DFS Plays

Brooks Koepka ($12,200)

Brooks Koepka certainly qualifies as a "course horse" at TPC Southwind, as he won on this layout in 2019 and posted a T2 in last year's edition, as well as a pair of top-three results before this event was of WGC status. Brooks is playing his best golf when the irons are firing and he's certainly has them dialed in over the last couple of months. The four-time major winner has now gained strokes on Approach in each of his last five starts and grades out second in this elite field in SG: Ball Striking over the last 24 rounds.

Jordan Spieth ($11,700)

Some other high-priced options have better course history than Spieth in this event (T30 in '20 & T12 in '19), but it's fair to say that the Texan is a totally different player at this point in time. He's been tremendous throughout 2021 and has gained strokes both T2G and on Approach in a hard-to-fathom 10 consecutive starts. He heads to Memphis off a runner-up finish in the Open in his last start...his second runner-up result in his last four outings.

Louis Oosthuizen ($11,200)

How good is this dude playing right now? Louis heads to Memphis on an absolute tear. He's finished T3 or better in four of his last five starts, and oh by the way, three of those events were major championships. The big knock on Oosthuizen is he doesn't ever seem to actually win. However, I'm still more than happy to lock him into my DFS lineups, especially on a TPC Southwind layout that has proven to be a terrific fit for him in his two recent trips to Memphis (T6 '20 & T20 '19).

Daniel Berger ($10,900)

f we're talking about things from a course history perspective then Daniel Berger jumps to the top of any conversation when discussing TPC Southwind. Berger went back-to-back on the Memphis layout in 2016 and '17 to capture the first two PGA Tour victories of his career. Berger demonstrated that he still has a taste for Southwind in last year's WGC FedEx, posting a T2 against the stouter competition that comes with the elite nature of WGC fields. All signs point to continued success for him this week, as in addition to the elite course history in comes into the event in ultra-sharp form, having posted top-10 finishes in two of his last three starts. He grades out fifth in SG: Approach over his last 12 rounds and has traditionally thrived on short golf courses. Berger grades out second in the field in SG: Total on courses carding out less than 7,200 yards.

Mid-Priced FanDuel DFS Plays

Matt Fitzpatrick ($10,000)

The Englishman often pops up for me on courses where length isn't a prerequisite for success. That's the case this week on a TPC Southwind layout that Matt Fitzgerald has successfully navigated each of the last two years, posting a T6 last year and a T4 in 2019. Fitzy got off to a rip-roaring start this year, logging two top-fives and two top-10s over his first six 2021 starts on U.S. soil. While his play has leveled off a tiny bit, he still comes into the week off two solid European showings at the Scottish Open (2nd) and Open Championship (T26). His precision off the tee helps him to rank eighth in this week's field in Fairways Gained and that accuracy will be a huge asset on this tricky Tennessee layout.

Webb Simpson ($9,900)

It's been a very un-Webb Simpson-like summer for Webb Simpson, a player that's normally so consistent we can set our watches by his results. Not sure if there have been some injury issues (he withdrew from his hometown event at Quail Hollow) or if the Wake Forest alum is just battling a slump, but he's only made four starts since May and missed the cut in two of them. However, his most recent start at the Open Championship was also his best one in a long time, as a T19 finish at Royal St. George's makes me interested in buying the dip with him this week. Simpson should feel right at home at TPC Southwind...he's went T2-T12 in his last two WGC-FedEx St. Jude starts and this short layout his the type of track where he can do some real damage when things are clicking.

Abraham Ancer ($9,500)

There's definitely a trend emerging here with our mid-priced selections, as Abraham Ancer is a very similar player to both Matt Fitzpatrick and Webb Simpson. The Mexican is extremely accurate off the tee, ranking fifth in the field in Fairways Gained, while also being sharp enough with the irons to stand 11th in Greens In Regulation Gained. Ancer lacks true firepower and runs into trouble on massive layouts as a result, but a T15 in last year's WGC-FedEx St. Jude indicates he'll have no trouble handling this 7,400-yard TPC Southwind track.

Low-Priced FanDuel DFS Players

Shane Lowry ($9,400)

I think you'll notice that ownership will be at lower-than-it-should-be levels for most of the guys that played in the Olympics last week. The fatigue factor is a legitimate concern, but the flip side of the coin is that these guys are used to dealing with travel on a weekly basis. So despite his participation in Tokyo last week, I'm willing to give Shane Lowry a look at this reasonable $9.4k price tag. The man from Northern Ireland has been sneaky good this summer with four top-10s and zero missed cuts since March. We can attribute those results to the fact that Lowry has finally gotten his irons in order. He's gained strokes on Approach in each of his last nine starts and grades out 11th in this elite field in that SG category over the last 24 rounds.

Harris English ($9,100)

English hasn't played this event since it ascended to WGC status, but if we jump back in time to when this was the plain-Jane St. Jude Invitational we'll find that the UGA alum has had some success on this layout. He won here in 2013 and snagged a T10 in the 2017 edition. That course history, coupled with the fact that he's been on a dynamic run that includes a win at the Travelers and a T3 at the U.S. Open over the last six weeks, puts English near the top of my value plays this week, as this $9.1k price tag sticks out as one of the best salary savers on the slate.

Kevin Kisner ($7,900)

Love the price tag for Kisner, a player that brings both a solid DFS floor and sneaky upside to the table. The South Carolina was on a tear in weeks prior to the Open, posting a T8 at the Rocket Mortgage and a T5 at the Travelers before being undone by one bad round at Royal St. George's. This Southwind layout is manageable for the light-hitting vet and while his results here don't jump off the page, he's fought for top-25s in each of his WGC starts and never missed a cut in the old St. Jude Classic.
