Mike Montgomery Looking To Keep Arm Healthy In 2018
Speaking to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Cubs pitcher Mike Montgomery spoke about how he would like to keep his arm healthy even if he is not a starter. Montgomery started 2017 as a reliever before switching to a starter and then back going back to the bullpen. Overall, Montgomery had a solid year, however, not having a clear role took a toll on his arm. Montgomery stated that he does want to be a starting pitcher at some point but that he enjoys his role as the team's swingman because “being in a unique role is something I take pride in.” There were multiple reports earlier in the week that Montgomery will be stretched out as a starting pitcher, but unless the Cubs decide to operate a six-man rotation, his best bet will be a role similar to last season. There is also the possibility that the left-hander could be dealt at some point and enter another team's rotation. Montgomery has some appeal if he is dealt or an injury happens to a Cubs starter, but for now it’s to leave him off your radar.
