Week 15 Fantasy Football Tight End Outlooks

Theo Johnson, New York Giants

New York Giants tight end Theo Johnson (toe) was a limited participant for the team's first practice following a Week 14 bye. Last seen in a primetime Monday night loss to the Patriots, Johnson struggled with a costly drop while bringing in only three of his eight targets for 29 yards. His status is worth monitoring through the week, as he has built a strong connection with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, and his favorable Week 15 matchup against the Commanders has him firmly in the streaming conversation to begin the fantasy playoffs.

Prior to the Week 13 loss to New England, Johnson had finished as a top-12 tight end in six of his last nine outings, and the explosive athlete is currently RotoBaller's TE15 for Week 15.

Jake Ferguson, Dallas Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson (calf) was limited during Wednesday's practice with a calf issue. Ferguson had a clean bill of health heading into Week 14's Thursday night matchup with the Lions, and he was heavily involved throughout the game, finishing with five catches on seven targets for 58 yards. Ferguson has been the TE3 in Half-PPR formats and is RotoBaller's TE8 heading into a Week 15 Sunday night matchup with the Vikings, so his status certainly bears monitoring.

Third-year tight end Luke Schoonmaker makes for an interesting pivot should Ferguson's availability remain cloudy until game time, but with all teams now past the bye, fantasy managers should be able to find higher upside streaming options in what would be a worst-case scenario.

T.J. Hockenson, Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson (shin) was a non-participant during Wednesday's practice session. Hockenson logged his lowest snap count of the season at 56 percent during last week's win over the Washington Commanders, catching two of three targets for 12 yards and a touchdown. Hockenson could have picked up this shin issue during the game, which led to more time on the sideline. Regardless, Hockenson will need to be monitored throughout the week.

If the injury is serious enough to keep him out, Josh Oliver figures to see an expanded role during the Week 15 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. Oliver hauled in two receptions for 24 yards and two touchdowns during last week's victory.

Kyle Pitts Sr., Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts Sr. (knee) tied a season-high on Sunday with 10 targets and eclipsed his season-high yardage total -- which was set in Week 13 -- with 90 yards receiving on six catches. He did not find the end zone, as he's still sitting with just one touchdown on the season, but the 25-year-old has been plenty useful on volume alone, especially in PPR leagues.

With Drake London (knee) missing the last three games (and also Week 8), the 6-foot-6 tight end has become Kirk Cousins' favorite pass-catcher, averaging eight targets, six receptions, and 64 yards receiving per contest in the four games with Cousins under center this season. Pitts popped up on the injury report earlier in the week with a knee injury and was a limited participant up to and including Wednesday's practice, resulting in a questionable designation for Thursday's matchup on the road against the Buccaneers.

London, however, has been ruled out for TNF, so Pitts could be in line to maintain his temporary status as the team's No. 1 receiver again in Week 15 so long as he's active. Tampa Bay is middle of the pack in terms of fantasy points allowed to opposing tight ends, but the fifth-year pro shapes up as a mid-range TE1 for Thursday, so fantasy managers will want to double-check his status before kickoff.

Cade Otton, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles said that tight end Cade Otton (knee) is doubtful to play in Week 15 against the division-rival Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. Otton missed practice on Monday and Tuesday but was seen on the practice field on Wednesday. Apparently, it wasn't enough to convince the coaching staff that he's ready to play on a short week. The good news for Tampa is that they could be getting both receivers Mike Evans (collarbone) and Jalen McMillan (neck), back in Week 15.

Fantasy managers who had the 26-year-old Otton in their starting lineups need to move him to the bench this week. Payne Durham should be the Bucs' top pass-catching option at TE on Thursday, but fantasy managers should have better streaming options available. Durham has one catch for 11 yards in 13 games this year and 17 receptions for 184 yards and two touchdowns in 42 career games.
