Clarke Schmidt Defeats Mariners To Earn First Win
Clarke Schmidt (1-1) allowed three runs on three hits over six innings in his team's 11-5 win over the Seattle Mariners. Schmidt issued two free passes and struck out six to improve to (1-1) on the season. He tossed 62 of 92 pitches for strikes (10 whiffs), bolstering a strong 32% CSW, logging his second consecutive quality start. The 29-year-old pitched well for the most part, but all three hits against him went for extra bases, and two of them left the yard via Jorge Polanco and Julio Rodriguez. While his ERA (4.73) may not have caught up yet, Schmidt is actually pitching pretty well -- affording opposing batters a .211 xBA and enjoying solid quality of contact metrics. Additionally, it's encouraging to see him reach six innings in each of his last two starts. He'll look to keep up the momentum in his next one, which could come later this week against the Yanks' cross-town rivals, the New York Mets.
