With injuries beginning to pile up in the major leagues, several pitching prospects are on the brink of receiving the call. This week, we will take a look at the top pitching prospect in the sport who is set to make his Triple-A debut, suggesting his MLB debut could be right around the corner.

In addition, we will take a look at a name that has begun to flash elite upside, after missing most of the 2024 campaign due to injuries. This is a top pitching prospect in the sport who has been quite overlooked through the first month of the campaign.

Bubba Chandler, Pittsburgh Pirates

Currently At Triple-A

Bubba Chandler has continued to dominate at Triple-A. In his last start, the right-hander tossed five innings of one-run ball. He allowed just three hits and one free pass. He struck out a season-high nine batters.

Through 25 1/3 innings at Triple-A Indianapolis, the No. 14-ranked prospect in the sport has posted an impressive 1.42 ERA with a 0.67 WHIP. He has struck out 36 batters and served up just seven free passes.

The 22-year-old has picked up right where he left off at Triple-A last season, where he held a 1.83 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP across 39 1/3 innings of work during his first look at this level.

Carmen Mlodzinski holds the final spot in the rotation but has struggled in this role. Over his last four starts (17 1/3 innings), the right-hander has allowed 14 runs and 25 hits.

Given Chandler's impressive progression at Triple-A, expect the Pirates to give him the call before the end of the month. When he earns a promotion, he will have a great chance to stay in the majors through the remainder of the season and will likely be a must-start option in all formats.

Andrew Painter, Philadelphia Phillies

Andrew Painter has dealt with numerous injuries throughout his young career, but he is nearing his MLB debut. The 22-year-old made his long-awaited return to the bump during the Arizona Fall League, as he had not pitched since 2022 due to Tommy John surgery.

The Phillies closely monitored his workload during the season's opening month but have given him the green light to move up to Triple-A. Painter began the season with Low-A Clearwater, where he logged just 11 1/3 innings of work across four starts.

During this stretch, he only tossed four innings of work in one start. However, despite the limited pitch count, he was sharp, allowing just five runs and posting a near-perfect 12:1 K:BB.

The 22-year-old is set to make his Triple-A debut on May 8. While he will likely need at least a month's work at Triple-A before being considered for a move up to Philadelphia, given his immense potential, he has officially made the stash list.

Zebby Matthews, Minnesota Twins

Currently At Triple-A

Zebby Matthews had a disappointing outing at Triple-A this past week but remains a strong stash option heading into Week 6. In this outing, Matthews served up a season-high four walks and allowed two runs for the second time in a single start.

However, prior to this showing, Matthews held a stellar 1.45 ERA with a 1.02 WHIP across 18 2/3 innings of work. He struck out 24 batters and showed near-perfect command, allowing just three walks.

Matthews has taken a significant step forward this season in relation to his production at Triple-A during the 2024 campaign. In 2024, Matthews struggled during his first taste of the top level of the minor leagues, holding a 5.68 ERA with a 1.32 WHIP.

The current No. 4 option in Minnesota, Simeon Woods Richardson, walked five batters in his last start and has held a modest 3.96 ERA over his last 25 frames. In addition, the No. 5 option, Chris Paddack, has begun to turn the corner after his slow start but still sits with an underwhelming 4.03 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.

If Woods Richardson or Paddack continue to struggle, Matthews should have a clear path to return to the major leagues.

Jacob Misiorowski, Milwaukee Brewers

Jacob Misiorowski has begun to flip the script after a slow start to the Triple-A regular season. After posting a 2.89 ERA with a 1.18 WHIP across his first 18 2/3 innings, the right-hander has held an impressive 0.53 ERA and a 0.82 WHIP over his last three starts (17 innings).

One major factor driving his progression forward is his control. Through his first 28 2/3 frames, Misiorowski held a 21:12 K:BB. However, over his last three starts, the No. 97-ranked prospect in the sport has held a 22:5 K:BB.

In addition, it is a great sign to see Misiorowski begin to log six innings in a start. This suggests that the Brewers are putting the final touches on his development before they give him the call to Milwaukee.

This weekend, the Brewers have had a tough time containing the Chicago Cubs as Quinn Priester allowed seven runs in four 1/3 innings and Jose Quintana allowed six runs in five.

If the Brewers want to remain competitive in the NL Central, they will need to promote their top pitching prospect.

Cade Horton, Chicago Cubs

Cade Horton of the Chicago Cubs is the final pitcher on this list. Horton was on track to make his MLB debut last season but suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. The former seventh overall pick was closely monitored in spring training but given the clearance to open the regular season at Triple-A Iowa.

Through his first 23 innings of work this season, the right-hander has done nothing short of surpassing expectations. Across this stint, Horton has posted an impressive 1.17 ERA with a 0.96 WHIP. He has struck out 28 batters and served up just 12 walks.

Control was an issue in his first three starts of the season (allowed 10 walks in first 12 1/3 innings), but that has begun to resolve as he allowed just two free passes over his last 10 2/3 frames.

This is also a great sign for the Oklahoma product, as he struggled to adjust during his first 18 innings at Triple-A before being shut down with a shoulder strain. In his first stint at Iowa in 2024, Horton allowed 17 hits and 15 runs.

Fantasy managers should keep a close eye on Horton's progression as he could be in the mix to move up to the Northside in the coming weeks. With Justin Steele (elbow) ruled out for the season, Horton would provide a much-needed spark to the back-end of the Cubs rotation.
