ANALYSIS: After performing well in Triple-A last season, Detroit Tigers third base and outfield prospect Justyn-Henry Malloy is nearing his major league debut.

Through 31 games with Triple-A Toledo, the 24-year-old has posted a strong .271/.419/.449 line with three home runs, two stolen bases, and a 27:36 BB:K ratio this season.

In 2023, Mallory posted a similar .277/.417/.474 with 23 home runs through 135 games at Triple-A. 

Malloy's power production is down slightly this season as he is hitting ground balls at a slightly higher rate than last season, but in such a small sample size, his power numbers could quickly reach his previous season’s total.

While Malloy's batting skills are major league-ready, his defense is a work in progress. Last season, he struggled at the hot corner, committing 12 errors in 60 games. As a result, he has been rotating between the outfield and designated hitter positions in 2024.

Currently, the Tigers have had a revolving door at designed hitter with Mark Canha and Kerry Carpenter, among others seeing the majority of starts there. This creates a bit of a logjam for Malloy since, due to his poor defense, he may only see time as the designated hitter when he is promoted.

For now, Malloy should be stashed in deeper formats, but shallow league managers should wait until he continues to build more confidence in his defensive skills before adding him.
