Carlos Rodon Injury Update

New York Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodon (hamstring) was able to throw on flat ground on Wednesday in Chicago, just as the Yankees hoped he'd be able to do after landing on the injured list on Monday with a low-grade left-hamstring strain. Rodon wanted to continue pitching through the leg injury, but the Yankees made the final decision to put him on the shelf. The good news is the 30-year-old southpaw could have a short stay on the IL and be able to rejoin the rotation later this month.

Rodon has been a pretty big fantasy bust after signing a huge deal with the Yanks over the winter. He's made just six starts due to back and forearm injuries and has a 7.33 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 25 strikeouts in 27 innings.

Joe Musgrove Injury Update

San Diego Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove (shoulder) is slated to begin playing catch in a little more than two weeks, around Aug. 24, and then get another MRI exam at the end of the month. Musgrove is optimistic about his return this year, but he's committed to not pushing his comeback from right-shoulder inflammation.

If he feels good when he resumes throwing and imaging looks good, he will begin a throwing program that could have him back in the starting rotation by mid-September. Any further damage to his shoulder capsule could require surgery. The 30-year-old has been great for fantasy managers in 2023, but the reality is that even if he's able to return next month, he'll only have a couple starts to close out the regular season. Jordan Romano Injury Update

Toronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano (back) tossed 33 pitches in Wednesday's bullpen session and came away feeling "great." While it remains unknown if the 30-year-old requires a rehab assignment, it would likely be a relatively brief one, anyway. Romano is eligible to come off the 15-day injured list as early as Saturday versus the Chicago Cubs, and it appears possible he could be activated ahead of that contest.

The All-Star stopper was forced to the IL following his July 28 appearance when lower-back inflammation pulled him from a save chance against the Los Angeles Angels. It seems as though the expiration date on Jordan Hicks' fantasy value as Toronto's favorite for saves is nearing a close, as Romano would assume closing duties upon his return. (MLB.com)

Hunter Greene Injury Update

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene (hip), who has been on the injured list with right-hip pain since June 19, is expected to make two more minor-league rehab starts before rejoining the Reds' starting rotation. Greene began his rehab in the Arizona Complex League before joining Triple-A Louisville last Saturday. He's expected to work four innings for Louisville on Thursday.

The 24-year-old had a 2.31 ERA in his last four starts before going on the IL, including six scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts on May 26 against the Chicago Cubs. The hard-throwing right-hander will immediately slot back into Cincy's rotation later this month and should be rostered in all fantasy leagues despite missing significant time due to injury this year. Chris Sale Injury Update

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that the team expects left-hander Chris Sale (shoulder) to make the start on Friday against the Detroit Tigers and go four innings. The Red Sox are bringing Sale back from the injured list after he made just two minor-league rehab starts, so it's no surprise that he'll be on a limited pitch count in his first big-league appearance since early June.

In his last rehab start for Triple-A Worcester, the 34-year-old southpaw tossed 54 pitches. Despite the excellent matchup against Detroit, Sale will have a low fantasy ceiling in his return on Friday. But he looked solid on his rehab assignment and deserves to be rostered in all fantasy leagues because of his strikeout upside when healthy.

Jose Alvarado Injury Update

Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Jose Alvarado (elbow/hand) saw his scheduled batting practice rained out on Thursday. The 28-year-old is now set to face hitters on Friday, but it doesn't sound as though his future rehab assignment is being pushed back. If all goes well, Alvarado could start the minor-league assignment as soon as Tuesday, per Phillies skipper Rob Thomson.

The southpaw has spent two separate stints on the injured list this year with troublesome left elbow inflammation, effectively ceding Philly's ninth-inning role to Craig Kimbrel in the process. Nonetheless, Alvarado remains a decent fantasy stash with a 1.38 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 39 strikeouts over 26 innings this season.
