Three top fantasy baseball prospects - Chandler Simpson, Jonah Tong, Jack Perkins - that can make big impacts. These MLB prospects are waiver wire pickups or stashes.
Fantasy managers have seen several prospects who were not considered "top" prospects make an impact through the early part of the campaign. For example, Kansas City southpaw Noah Cameron and Milwaukee right-hander Logan Henderson were not considered top prospects in their system but held high value at times throughout the season.
In this piece, we will analyze three players who are performing at a high level in the minor leagues but are not viewed as the top prospects in their system. One of these players has already gotten a taste of the major leagues and made a significant impact, especially in the stolen base department.
Should those players be left on the waiver wire, or should fantasy managers add them this weekend? Let's dive in!

Jonah Tong, SP, New York Mets
Current Level: Double-A
Availability: 5% rostered
2025 MiLB stats: 54 1/3 IP, 1.99 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 91 SO, 29 BB
While Brandon Sproat and Christian Scott were once viewed as the rising stars in the Mets' pitching system last year, Scott has dealt with injuries, and Sproat has struggled to find consistency. As a result, Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong have emerged as the new top arms in the system.
While McLean made a strong case to be on this list, I want to spotlight the 21-year-old right-hander instead.
Tong made his professional debut in 2023 after being drafted in the seventh round of the 2022 MLB Draft. In 2023, Tong logged just 13 1/3 innings, so his 2024 campaign was his true debut campaign.
In 2024, Tong logged 113 innings across time at Low-A, High-A (primarily), and Double-A. Across this stint, Tong struck out 160 batters and held a 3.03 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP.
Through 2025, Tong has shown similar upside and has even taken strides further. He has spent his entire campaign with Double-A and has looked the part. Through 54 1/3 innings, Tong has tallied 91 punchouts with a stellar 1.99 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP.
His 41.6% K rate is nearly seven points higher than his 2024 mark. In addition, he has raised his ground-ball rate to 53.2% (from 45.2% in 2024). His lone blemish this season is that his walk rate rose three points in relation to 2024.
Given Tong's emergence at Double-A, fantasy managers should expect the Georgia Premier Academy product to earn the call to Triple-A Syracuse sooner rather than later. While a 2025 MLB debut may seem difficult to picture, the Mets will be in the postseason hunt, and Tong could be their top pitching reinforcement by the end of the summer.
Jonah Tong now leads the minors with 91 strikeouts in 54.1 innings 🔥
The Mets RHP has been one of the biggest rising pitching prospects in all of baseball this season.

Chandler Simpson, OF, Tampa Bay Rays
Current Level: Triple-A
Availability: 5% rostered
2025 MLB stats: 35 G, .285/.315/.317, 4 2B 11 RBI, 17 R, 19 SB
Unlike many players that have been included in my hitting prospects to stash series, Chandler Simpson has proven he can be a valuable fantasy player at the MLB level. In his time in the majors, he hit .285 with 19 stolen bases in 35 games.
Unfortunately, being a valuable fantasy player doesn't always make you a valuable player, as he had an 83 WRC+ and was not a strong outfield defender, generating -.1 fWAR in this stint. That being said, the Rays clearly did value him a decent amount when they needed him to play, as he often hit at the top of the lineup.
You know what you're going to get with Simpson when he gets the call back to the majors. You're getting a lot of speed with a respectable batting average and zero power.
Simpson is going to get another chance in the majors this season. He might need an injury to another Rays outfielder, but he's shown what he can do for our fantasy teams already, which makes him a worthwhile stash in most roto/category formats.

Jack Perkins, SP, Athletics
Current Level: Triple-A
Availability: 5% rostered
2025 AAA stats: 39 IP, 3.23 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 61 SO, 15 BB
Perkins returned from injury at the beginning of May and struggled out of the gate. He has improved as the season has worn on and is coming off a 10-strikeout start. Despite a six-run blowup in May, Perkins has a 2.58 ERA and a 36.6 percent strikeout rate.
Perkins is armed with a big fastball that sits 96-98 mph. It is a high-riding pitch from a low release point, missing plenty of bats. Perkins can also mix in a running sinker on you as well to keep the ball on the ground.
The slider evolved into a sweeper in 2024, reaching mid-80s with high spin rates. It averages around ten inches of sweep with good depth as well. Perkins also mixes in an upper-80s changeup with good depth and arm-side movement.
Given the performance in Triple-A and the Athletics' skidding, it might not be long before we see Perkins in Sacramento. Perkins will need to be added to the 40-man this offseason, so we may see him added over the next several weeks. Last summer, Perkins spent most of his time with Double-A and posted a higher 1.14 WHIP.
Currently, Mitch Spence and Jacob Lopez hold the final spots in the rotation. Spence is coming off two strong outings but posted a modest 5.29 ERA over his previous 17 innings. Lopez has logged 10-straight scoreless frames but held a high 9.19 ERA over his previous 15 2/3 innings of work. Given Perkins' progression this season, he could join the Athletics very soon.
Athletics RHP prospect Jack Perkins may be one of the more underrated arms in the minor leagues
Last 5 PCL starts: 26 IP, 2.08 ERA, 45 K (43%), 11 BB (10.6%), .154 OBA
