Fantasy Football Drop Candidates
Read the recent news and fantasy outlooks of some of the top cut candidates:
Kyler Murray, QB - ARI (Cut List Ranking No. 10)
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray (foot) has been in the building working hard, and the expectation is that he should return at some point this season, according to general manager Monti Ossenfort. When asked if that meant a return to the starting lineup, Ossenfort was less committal, saying, "A lot can happen" during the four weeks Murray is slated to miss after being placed on IR on Wednesday.
The Cardinals are 1-2 in the three games started by Jacoby Brissett, but the offense has taken a notable step forward, with both Marvin Harrison Jr. and Trey McBride benefiting from Brissett's 287 passing yards per game, along with his six touchdowns to only one interception. As he supports the team's primary pass-catchers, Brissett himself has also entered the streaming conversation in deeper leagues and superflex formats.
Jayden Daniels, QB - WAS (Cut List Ranking No. 11)
According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels' MRI and medical opinions revealed positive news, as his dislocated left elbow is not as severe as initially anticipated. There was no ligament damage & he won't need surgery, and Daniels will not be immediately placed on Injured Reserve.
What a sigh of relief that is for Daniel's long-term outlook and dynasty fantasy managers. Based on initial reports, this was a gruesome on-field injury where medical experts were working to stabilize his arm. While it's too quick to jump to conclusions that he will potentially be back in the 2025 season, Commanders fans and dynasty managers can feel some peace knowing there wasn't any ligament damage or what appears to be an extended absence beyond next season.
Marcus Mariota will be under center while Daniels is sidelined, and most pass-catchers such as Terry McLaurin (quad), Deebo Samuel Sr., and Zach Ertz will likely see a dip in their production without Daniels running the offense.
C.J. Stroud, QB - HOU (Cut List Ranking No. 14)
Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said on Wednesday that quarterback C.J. Stroud (concussion) will be out in Week 10 against the division-rival Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Backup Davis Mills will make the start with Stroud still in the concussion protocol following his head injury in the first half of the Week 9 loss to the Denver Broncos.
The Texans will hope that the 24-year-old Stroud can make enough progress in the league's concussion protocol to be cleared to play in another divisional clash next week against the Tennessee Titans. Stroud being out in Week 10 will make the Jaguars' defense/special teams unit a popular streaming option. This will be Mills' first NFL start since his second year in the league in 2022.
He went 17-for-30 passing for 137 yards with no touchdowns or picks in relief of Stroud last week. Consider him a low-end QB2 streaming option in superflex leagues this Sunday.
Terry McLaurin, WR - WAS (Cut List Ranking No. 22)
Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin (quadriceps), who suffered a setback in the Monday night loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8, has been ruled out for Sunday night's game against the Seattle Seahawks and is expected to be out next week against the Detroit Lions as well, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Rapoport adds that McLaurin could also miss the Week 11 contest against the Miami Dolphins.
Washington has its bye in Week 12, so it's possible that McLaurin could miss another three games after aggravating a quad injury that has already cost him four games this season. It's obviously bad news for the 30-year-old wideout, his fantasy managers, and the Commanders' offense moving forward. With McLaurin sidelined yet again, receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. and tight end Zach Ertz should lead the team in targets, with Luke McCaffrey and rookie Jaylin Lane also seeing expanded roles in the passing attack.
Kayshon Boutte, WR - NE (Cut List Ranking No. 18)
New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel announced on Friday that wide receiver Kayshon Boutte (hamstring) will not play this Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 10 action, per Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald. This was the expectation after Boutte missed practice all week following a hamstring injury he picked up early in last Sunday's win over the Atlanta Falcons.
Before the injury, the 23-year-old was on a three-game touchdown streak, so he's worth stashing in fantasy leagues if you have the room. Boutte already has a career-high five touchdown catches and has contributed 23 receptions for 431 yards on 31 targets through nine games in his third NFL season. With Boutte sidelined this weekend, Stefon Diggs will operate as the clear No. 1 wideout, with DeMario Douglas and Mack Hollins also in line for more targets.
Rookies Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III will be looking for more snaps as well.
Jacory Croskey-Merritt, RB - WAS (Cut List Rankings No. 32)
Washington Commanders rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt has struggled over the past month after a hot start to the season. The rookie has recorded 51 carries for 151 yards, no touchdowns, and a lost fumble while adding just three receptions (five targets) for nine yards in his past four games. Croskey-Merritt was outproduced by third-year back Chris Rodriguez Jr. in Washington's blowout loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night.
Rodriguez could be earning his way back into a more prominent role on early downs while veteran Jeremy McNichols handles the pass-down responsibilities. Croskey-Merritt has been held below four yards per carry in each of the last four games and has a longest run of just 11 yards in that time. Now, with star quarterback Jayden Daniels (elbow) out for an extended period of time, the Washington offense as a whole takes a significant hit. Croskey-Merritt doesn't catch passes, and now that the explosive runs have dried up, it's left fantasy managers with a disappointing result.
After a promising start to his career, Croskey-Merritt looks more like an RB3/RB4 option than the potential league winner he appeared to be earlier in the year.
