BALLER MOVE: Add in 14+ Team Leagues
ROSTERED: 30% of Leagues
ANALYSIS: Apparently Jimmy Garoppolo could be ready to play this Sunday, which in theory could put the breaks on a 49ers squad led by rookie QB Trey Lance for the rest of the season. We have ourselves a good old-fashioned San Francisco stand-off. This familiar situation could play out in several ways over the next 13 weeks, but history is not on Garoppolo's side, and time is very much with Lance. This being his eighth season in the NFL, Jimmy G. has had one, yes, one season where he was able to start in more games than six. Granted it was in 2019 when he had a phenomenal year and took San Francisco to the Super Bowl, but outside of 2019, Garoppolo has only eclipsed 1,000 passing yards twice.
Lance has so far played like he knew his moment would come sooner rather than later because he has pounced on every opportunity presented to him, big or small. From passing 1-1 for a five-yard touchdown pass in week one to the single rush attempt that he took for one yard and a score the week after, leading up to his extended relief appearance this week against the Seahawks, stepping up for the injured Jimmy G. to the tune of 9-18 passing for 157 yards and two touchdowns, and was San Francisco's second-leading rusher of the game with 41 yards on seven carries. That's impressive statistical accumulation considering the time he was allotted, but if he can continue to limit turnovers, the versatile array of weapons in the 49er passing game should be a big help in bumping up his completion rate over time. When you have wheels like Trey Lance, it makes sense that the learning curve isn't as dangerous to navigate; and with his physical tools and the strength of the group around him, he could quite easily turn into a waiver wire hit of the year for investors in deeper leagues.
