One and Done Selections - The American Express

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Joe Idone, Matt Miller, Byron Lindeque and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

Joe Nicely - Sungjae Im

Alternate -

We aren't sneaking up on the OAD competition with Sungjae Im this week, but there’s a good reason he’ll be a popular option. Im has been a top-20 machine at the AmEx, finishing T18 or better in all five of his career starts in this event. He's gained 41.08 total strokes in this tournament since 2019, which is the best mark among this week's entrants by nearly two strokes.

In addition to the elite course history, the young South Korean heads to this year's edition with a full head of steam. Im logged an impressive T5 at The Sentry two weeks ago, gaining 6.5 strokes total and finishing on the positive side in every major SG statistical category.

As the season unfold, there are always opportunities to get contrarian, so I’m content to go with what might be a vanilla choice in Sungae this week.

Yearly Earnings - $106,102
Yearly Cuts Made - 1/1

Joe Idone - Akshay Bhatia

Alternate -

In a tournament that routinely produces winners from beyond the top of the board, I’m ignoring the favorites this week. There’s too many unfamiliar variables with the setup which makes me more comfortable taking a bit of a risk. This week I’m dipping into the 60/1 range and taking a chance with Akshay Bhatia.

I love that he played, and played well, in both Hawaii events. He’s turned himself into an extremely proficient mid-to-short iron player to coincide with a streaky putter. It’s the improving game that his earned multiple Sunday final pairing spots and a victory at the Barracuda last summer. He’s young, but experienced, and primed to tackle the test at The American Express.

Spencer Aguiar - Sungjae Im

Alternate - Tony Finau

I keep feeling like my hands are tied because the signature events are worth 2-3x as much as some of these smaller events.

Perhaps that is a reason for me to dip down the board and play an option like Si Woo Kim (who will be my second choice for two-pick contests) or Cameron Davis. I also could swing for the fence on Tony Finau or Justin Thomas, two golfers in poor form. That said, I just keep coming back to the fact that I don't really have a particular spot outside of Florida where I am trying to deploy Sungjae Im.

You likely won't see me release a One and Done play for the rest of the time that will be this chalky, but I will buy into Sungjae alongside the masses and settle for what inevitably becomes a T17. In my opinion, the big-money events will be a better spot to make my first attempt to separate from the pack.

Yearly Earnings - $106,102
Yearly Cuts Made - 1/1

Matt Miller - Sungjae Im

This week I'm rolling with Sungjae Im. Sungjae has played in this event each of the past five years, never finishing worse than 18th. Four of his five appearances have resulted in top 12 finishes. In terms of players who are a proverbial "horse for the course", Sungjae is certainly up there. It feels like the two time PGA Tour winner is at worst, a safe T25 guy this week.
The 25-year-old did not play in the Sony Open last week, but did compete in the Sentry to start the season. Im finished inside the top five and lead the field in total birdies for the week. In fact, not only did he lead the field in birdies, he set a PGA Tour 72-hole record for birdies in a week. This is a very good sign heading into an event that was won at -27 last year. If Sungjae picks up where he left off in Kapalua, I expect him to be in one of the final groups on Sunday.

Yearly Earnings - $300,875
Yearly Cuts Made - 1/1

Byron Lindeque - Matthieu Pavon

Lucas Glover missed two putts last week that were so short, he could have used his useless broomstick to retrieve the ball past the hole without moving his shock-ridden feet. That was a gamble that simply did not pay off, despite being freakishly hot with his irons entering the week. $0 to start off the year. Granted, Grayson Murray definitely helped limit the damage for those that played Keegan and Ben An. Only but a flesh wound!

If I were to guess who wins the American Birdie Express this week, I would take the Fiery Frenchman, Matthieu Pavon! If I told you using a horrible French accent, Pavon has won a DPWT event just 7 starts ago and in his last 8 events, he has 5 top-10 finishes and a T15, would you believe he is 150-1 to win this event? His first PGA Tour event as a PGA Tour Rookie was a T7 at the Sony, where he gained 8 strokes with his irons and putter. Waialae CC demands a little more from all areas of your game, while app and putting are essential to get to the winning score of -23 the last five years. Pavon can do that!

His best strokes gained come one easy courses where his distance, iron play and putting can go to work! His form is peaking and he is about as under the radar as the USS Stingray in the movie Down Periscope where they turn off all devices and one of their crew members starts making dolphin noises to avoid detection from the Navy’s best tracking tools! Matthieu Pavon is going to sneak by everybody, sounding like a French dolphin and get us off to an early lead in OADs!
