Vladimir Guerrero Jr.: Great Expectations Must Turn Into Great Production
4 years agoInstead of making the hoped leap into a new level of stardom last season, Guerrero's 2020 season seemed like something of an extension of his 2019 campaign that left fantasy managers wondering if they had bought into the hype a bit too early. His surface numbers mostly seemed to be in line with the previous season, although a 17.6 HR/FB% produced a bit more power, and the strikeout rate dipped from 17.7 to 15.6. Guerrero is certainly hitting the ball hard, as his average Exit Velocity of 92.5 was in the Top 7 percentile of the league, as was the Hard Hit% of 50.8. But with a career Launch Angle of 6 so far, there are some obvious adjustments needed to be made so he can lift the ball more often. Guerrero has fashioned ground ball percentages of 49.6 and 54.6 percent the last year and the 27.9 FB% was an obvious issue last year. But when you consider Guerrero is just turning 22 years old and the incredible skill set, it appears to be just a matter of time of waiting for the inevitable big breakout to happen. His ADP of 56 makes a lot of sense, as Guerrero has not earned a lofty draft slot just yet, but he may be on the verge of busting out at any time in terms of power and run production. When you draft Guerrero this season, you will walk the line between anticipation and a possibly exciting payoff.
