Tyrell Williams 2021 Outlook: The WR1 On A Poor Offense Still Gets Targets.
3 years agoTyrell Williams is a deep-threat receiver and his new quarterback Jared Goff is anything but an efficient deep-ball passer. Goff primarily targets the slot receiver and rarely throws the ball beyond 15 yards from the line of scrimmage so Williams' big plays downfield will be few and far between. However, there is some value to being the WR1 on a bad offense. The Lions should be trailing quite often this season because their offense is mediocre at best and their defense is still among the bottom of the league, so Williams should see plenty of targets to warrant a start during bye weeks or as an injury replacement. However, he currently sits firmly behind tight end T.J. Hockenson and running back D'Andre Swift in the target pecking order, and will likely quickly fall behind rookie Amon-Ra St. Brown, who should operate as the primary slot receiver from day one. Accordingly, no one should be targeting Williams in their drafts, but when a fantasy manager is looking at the board in round 14 in need of an upside receiver, Williams is surely one of the only ones left to have a locked-in starting role. He is a boom or bust receiver with far more bust to his game than boom, but he could be the one-week fill-in in a bad matchup that wins you the week, so don't write him off completely. Williams is currently being drafted as the WR81, behind his teammate Breshad Perriman who has not run with the starters at all in training camp and was just cut from the final roster, so he is clearly a value, albeit not a sexy one.
