Seth Beer 2022 Outlook: Big Time Sleeper Value If Healthy
3 years agoBeer doesn't get the appreciation that he deserves. The former first-round draft pick was an offensive juggernaut in college with massive raw power and a strong on-base presence. He entered pro ball with a bang and demolished lower-level pitching but he hasn't been as patient as a pro — although his approach would hardly be described as aggressive. Beer's calling card has always been the raw power. He slugged 26 home runs in 2019 before losing the 2020 season to COVID-19. He showed solid pop in 2021 but topped out at 16 home runs in 100 games at Triple-A. The power remained evident, though, with 33 doubles and a line-drive rate nearing 24%. Beer suffered a season-ending shoulder injury that required surgery in September and it's quite possible that it had been bothering him all season long as used the opposite field more often and struggled to get around on premium velocity. With a long history of producing premium power numbers, we fully expect Beer to rebound with a more stable shoulder joint. The 25-year-old's real-life prospect value has always been muted by his defensive deficiencies but that is far less of a concern with fantasy baseball. The implementation of the DH in the National League should also help provide him with a clear path to playing time, if healthy. Completely off the radar based on his ADP, Beer can be grabbed as a late-round flyer.
