Sean Manaea 2020 Outlook: Quality Starter For The Back Of Fantasy Rotation
5 years agoSean Manaea missed most of 2019 after getting arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder, but made the most of his opportunity to return late in the season. Manaea won four of five September starts while allowing just four earned runs across 29.2 innings with 30 strikeouts. Of course, Manaea isn't as good as that one-month sample size, but it was a good indication his shoulder is healthy and he's ready to resume his role atop the Oakland rotation. Prior to injuring his pitching shoulder late in 2018, Manaea was one of the solid, if unspectacular pitchers in baseball. His 3.59 ERA in 2018 was a career-best but was not supported by his peripheral metrics as his SIERA was almost a full run higher at 4.46. Manaea won't help out much in the strikeout department either. He struck out just 108 batters in 160 innings in 2018 while putting up a 16.5 percent strikeout rate, third lowest in baseball. Manaea relies heavily on inducing grounders posting a 41 percent ground ball rate or better in all four MLB seasons including 2018 when he kept his launch angle at a pristine 11.2. Grounders and a career 6.4 percent walk rate make the left-hander a capable fantasy starter. Expect Manaea to toss 160-170 innings with a high-3's ERA and plus-WHIP. His ADP of 170 is fair value for a middle of the rotation starter for fantasy, but don't reach as lack of K's limits his upside.
