Colorado Avalanche defenseman Samuel Girard found the back of the net for the first time in a long time during a 6-3 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night. Girard had not scored since November 28, a stretch spanning 26 games. The 20-year-old rearguard showed tantalizing promise as a rookie last season, but saying he has hit the sophomore slump would be putting it lightly. Girard has three goals, 12 assists, and a minus-six rating through 52 games this season despite seeing an average of 19:37 of ice time per game. It was a solid night for the Avalanche defense core as Erik Johnson and Nikita Zadorov also scored in the contest. The Avs will be back in action on Thursday night against the Washington Capitals.--Raymond Harrison - RotoBaller
