Sam Dyson Will Setup For Mark Melancon
7 years agoRelief pitcher Sam Dyson had a disastrous start to the 2017 season as the closer for the Texas Rangers before being designated for assignment and picked up by the Giants in June. In 16 2/3 innings with the Rangers, Dyson gave up 20 earned runs and blew four saves. He fared much better with the Giants and took over the closer role when Mark Melancon underwent season-ending surgery. With the Giants, Dyson was 14 of 17 in save opportunities and had a 4.03 ERA in 38 innings. Dyson has never been a big strikeout pitcher with a career 7.1 K/9. As long as Mark Melancon is healthy, he is the Giants closer and that limits Dyson's value for leagues that don't value holds. Dyson makes for a wise handcuff to owners who draft Melancon but won't hold much value without an injury to Melancon in 2018.
