The Tampa Bay Lightning have assigned defenseman Roman Schmidt to the Ontario Hockey League's Kitchener Rangers. The 20-year-old blueliner hasn't appeared in any games with the Lightning this season but did register an assist and a plus-two rating in one appearance with the American Hockey League's Syracuse Crunch. A 2021 third-round pick, Schmidt has played two seasons with the Rangers, tallying 15 goals and 61 points across 132 regular-season games while adding a goal and seven points across 21 postseason contests in that time. The powerhouse Rangers now have four NHL-drafted defensemen on their roster while the overage Schmidt provides a reliable presence to the club. He will compete for a job with the Lightning next season with three blueliners set to hit unrestricted free agency.--Brenton Kemp
