According to Christopher Smith of MassLive.com, Boston Red Sox shortstop prospect Marcelo Mayer (back) was able to take batting practice on Thursday. This is a great sign, as Mayer ended the 2024 campaign on the injured list due to a lumbar strain. Mayer was also able to begin baseball activities in the offseason. Seeing him already participate in full activities on Thursday is a great sign and suggests he is fully healthy entering camp. The former fourth overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft is viewed as the second-best prospect in the Boston system and 15th-best in the sport on MLB Pipeline. Last summer, Mayer posted a strong .307/.370/.480 line with 28 doubles and eight home runs across 77 games with Double-A. Given the time he missed last season, Mayer will likely open the season at the Triple-A level.--Andy Smith
